Career & Employment

Hi, will there be a Back To Work Over 50+ in the Cincinnati OH area soon?

I recently received an e-mail touting free community college for New Yorkers aged 25 to 55, even if they already have a degree. Why stop at age 55? I am age 75, still actively employed and paying taxes, and exploring new career opportunities. I would like to have an associate’s degree in the field I am entering and would appreciate the opportunity to get one from my local community college, but the State of New York has evidently decided that as an older person, I’m not worth the investment, even thou I already have a higher degree, which means that the investment in an AA or AS would be minimal.I object to NY State denying this privilege to older citizens, whose taxes are probably paying for the bulk of it.

Hello. My name is Felicia. I just had my 52nd birthday and also was laid off a few months prior. I would like to start my own small business. Unemployment will end soon and I need a few ideas on side work until I start having a few customers. I have used the AARP Career page and no jobs yet. If you know of anyone who has an online business and needs a website audit or help with systems then send me a comment. I have many technical skills. It is just a hard market right now. Thanks.

I am working as a Project Manager, I am PMP certified, I have a master's and doctorate in IT project management.  I am working in a bank where I have 30 years' work experience. I am being paid $16.00 an hour.  I was being paid $ 94,000 a year.  I left that job because of a breast cancer diagnosis.  When I was able to return to work this is all I could find. I have been submitting applications for 1 1/2 years.  I have submitted hundreds of applications.  I have only gotten a handful of interviews.  I feel I am being taken advantage of.  My education and experience are being utilized but not acknowledged.

I'm looking for some training on starting up an Etsy T-shirt business. My home base is Indianapolis. Does anyone have a list of local Indianapolis resources I could have a face to face meeting with?

Disappointed.  There is no more AARP job board.  They have plenty of pages of ‘tips’ and ‘how tos’. But no actual job listings. They now claim to have ‘curated’ jobs with AARP and Indeed.  But on that page, there is no active link to these purported job listings…https://www.aarp.org/membership/benefits/jobs/job-board/The only link takes you not to indeed or any curated listings but to a page containing more tips and ideas about jobs. Also, outside of AARP, I have looked at Workforce50, RetirementJobs, RetiredBrains, Seniors4Hire, and SeniorJobBank.   You may look at them as well, and see if your conclusion is different than mine: There are almost NO valid jobs on these sites, and they are little more than another assembly of ‘tips’ and ‘ideas’ for finding jobs.  Most of the sites look pretty outdated as well. Are there really no job boards representing companies that do not age discriminate, or even better, companies that value and actively seek more experienced, more stable, employees?

I am a newbie. In many aspects: new to AARP, new to Orlando FL vicinity, newly divorced, and now new to the ever so different workforce. I am a 59 y/o woman who now needs to rejoin the workforce after being a stay at home wife/mom/grandma for the past 27 years.  I’m lost. Does AARP, or anyone, offer free assistance for building a resume for someone in my current situation?   TIA for any guidance you may provide.

[Tuesday 9/22/26 5:50am ET]Curious if anyone has any TIPS to share!!! 🤔My daughter used the "online" sites when she got "laid off" in 2024. She now pays attention to things like making sure she UPDATES herself. In my "very humble" opinion, this is VERY IMPORTANT in today's Job Market.Me at age 68, seek out Consulting Gigs geared to SOLVING any "issues" a LOCAL organization maybe experiencing. I find work by "knocking" on doors. Lol, just DONOT have it in me to do the "online" routine. This way I CONTROL my "retirement". Yes, retired at age 62 when COVID reared it's ugly head at the place I worked for years. Hated retiring EARLY, but between me being the "only" one showing up for work & NO work "safeguards" to PROTECT me from the public (clients) - it was time to go. Laid low for a "few" years, got bored & finally felt SAFE to mingle AGAIN.Stop by to share & read what other members have to say. Thanks,Nicole 💼  (Jobs Forum)

I am looking for a remote job, does anyone know who is hiring?

FROM THE ARTICLE. 7 Questions to Ask Yourself Before You Unretire.Going back to work can enrich your life in retirement, but it can also cost you in unexpected ways. By Kerri Anne Renzulli, AARP. Published September 03, 2025. Traditionally, retirement means saying goodbye to the workforce and entering a new life stage of leisure, travel, hobbies and more time with loved ones. But not everyone relishes the idea of leaving their professional selves in the past.Around 1 in 5 retirees defy the standard definition of retirement by still clocking in and earning a paycheck, according to a recent T. Rowe Price study. Another 7 percent hope to join them soon as they seek employment. “As much as many people complain about their jobs or working in general, for many of us, work is where we derive meaning,” says Joseph Torre, a certified financial planner with Colarossi & Williams Financial Advisory Group in Islandia, New York. “Not all individuals have hobbies lined up on day on

Soon I will turn 60. Given that I am reliant on my spouse for income, and my employment history is very limited because all my jobs did not last, is it time for me to be realistic with myself and get out of the field of eLearning and Web Design? I love the field and don't want to leave. But given that there are so many talented younger people in the field I am wondering about my viability as I enter my older years. And who is to say I will still be married. I don't' want to leave this field. After all, I do have skills. But I have been rejected so many times after having job interviews. I feel lost! And I am scared!

No matter how OLD we are, sometimes finding an Income Source maybe a "challenge". Below is some information that may help hopefully!!! EVERYONE is welcome to post job-related information. Thank you,Nicole  💼  (Jobs Forum)

We know that some businesses still like to play stupid when it comes to hiring.  But when it comes time to say "Enough is enough", I have seen where some people choose to start their own business.  In the landscaping industry, much of it requires a CDL or something.  As when it comes to mowing or vacuuming leafs, you need to have a truck with a trailer.  Now what I have seen on the market are riding mowers where you can steer and accelerate with two levers.  And some dealers might even sell you a cab to put onto your riding mower.  Leaf vacuums are really mounted on a trailer and have a chute that tosses the chopped up leafs into the truck.  And often the truck is really a tricked out city delivery truck where the back door is a roll up type with several of it's sashes missing in order to make room for the chute to belch the yard debris into the truck and they also dump when it comes time to empty the cargo area.  I think the best cab for a truck

FROM THE ARTICLE. 6 Reasons Not to Leave a 401(k) Behind When You Switch Jobs.Rolling retirement savings into a new account can mean more investment options, less hassle. By Tamara E. Holmes, AARP. Published September 02, 2025. If you haven’t changed jobs in a while, there’s a good chance you will. The average American has held 12 jobs by the time they turn 56, according to the U.S. Department of Labor, and nearly half of U.S. managers surveyed in January said their companies were likely to lay off employees in 2025.A job switch doesn’t just change your income; it can also affect your ability to save for retirement. Nearly 6 in 10 U.S. workers have access to a 401(k) plan through their employer. If you’re one of them, you typically have three options when you change jobs: Roll the old 401(k) into another retirement account; cash it out (and pay taxes and a 10 percent penalty if you’re under age 59½); or leave it where it is, with your ex-employer. USE LINK BELOW TO

This is actually pretty clever.  You don't have to give your age, but you DO have to record that date you graduated from college.  It helps employers legally skirt the age issue because they are not asking for your birthdate, but they are getting the info another way. Should AARP champion the removal of this requirement?Jeff Johnson

I am looking for companies that have remote jobs with flexible hours.  What are the best websites to research these jobs?   I see lots of ads for this type of work, but I never know if they are the real deal or not.    Thanks for any help or advice you can give me.

I am over 80 and still working. I am wondering how many other AARP members over 80 are still working for pay at age over 80.

I was going to apply for a weekend job at Kaldi's Coffee in Kirkwood and when I looked at the career page, I noticed a couple of errors.  One was about education.  I alerted them about it when it at first said something about the year graduated from school or college and they did fix that.  And if it's work history, if it's a job I retired from, I did learn that if you keep the word "retired" secret from the application, it would make it a little bit harder to age discriminate.  But how do you approach it if the application marks it as a required field?  Don't you that that is a mistake on the application?  I let them know about it.

Hi, everyone -- I'm among those affected by the federal government's decisions to increase efficiencies and reduce costs.  Admittedly, I've viewed my role as one that might be better merged with others, so none of this is a surprise.  I'm not upset; rather, I see the decisions associated with my specific situation as making business sense. But I'm 57, and have no desire to slow down.  Toward the end of last year, I chose to return to graduate school and obtain a master's degree in computer science.  However, while doing so I would also like to continue working professionally in some part-time or freelance capacity to remain cash flow positive. I'm facing a couple of challenges: First, while I'm engaged in studies I'm seeking a type of work that is outside of conventional, full-time W-2 employmentSecond, I'm competing in a difficult job market with much younger talent who often are at a different stage in life I'm sure others have been in sim
