Hi Everyone. Will you help this old boy with a decision on how to respond when I don't understand/comprehend the pronunciation of modern names when introduced on the telephone? When someone answers the phone with the following, for example:    "Welcome to Spectrum, my name is 'Drea' and I'll be your technical specialist this morning." Substitute "Taz" or "Shanilla" and so forth, and I just can't understand what they've said. When I don't understand them, I ask them: "Would you repeat that for me, please; I can't hear as well as I used to."  I feel that is diplomatic. However, that frequently seems to be met with a bit of resentment or irritation, and right then I've given a bad first impression, which I didn't want. For that reason, I ask once and when they repeat it -- if I still can't grasp the name, I am very reluctant to ask again. Living in Arizona, I love the fact that I don't have to deal with the "Spring forward" and the "Fall back" any more.  Would you want to keep DLST or get rid of it?

For the first time, I'm checking out this forum. Because I am carless and impoverished, I have few friends and I am profoundly lonely. A person who is kind and compassionate is me. I have a great adult daughter whom I hardly see, and I am a talented writer who loves animals. I also love to read.I do not like drama and I do not cause poblems. I simply need a buddy at this time; my roommate is a living, breathing nightmare; he is an alcoholic and gaslighter (I just learned what this means). Much obliged for taking the time to read my post!

Why are there so many old post on these forums? I started to reply to one the other day, lucky me, I happened to see the date, it was from back in the teen years.Why doesn't AARP clean these things out and keep them current? Very, and I mean very, few times have I seen a subject stay active for more than 2/3 days on other sites.If there is a way to go to the current post would someone please tell me because I haven't found out how to get there.

Today has been a great day for me; it started out pretty bad with ride-share not showing up, but then... Found another ride-share who was so terrific and caring for older customers; met some really nice people while shopping who went out of their way to help me; then finished it with safe return home and neighbors not seen for a while are happy and healthy. Hope this will become an ongoing topic, but either way, wanted to share; it seems a while since a day this great for me; not attributable to any political/governmental/demographic identities, just people being caring and sharing people... Thank you for reading.

  2024 Holiday get togethers will be interesting this year!  Many conversations may start with family talking around things that concern them but they can easily escalate to hateful commentary.  This can happen even when someone mentions the high cost of the meal or the cost to fill the gas tank for travel.   How do we avoid the 'triggers' of a conversation?  "Nice Day" or "Have a blessed day." can be mistaken by someone just looking to irritate another.   Topic suggestions?

Published November 26, 2024. Pedestrian deaths from traffic crashes are on the rise and AARP is advocating for improved auto safety features to protect those traveling on foot. Overall, motor vehicle deaths are dropping, but pedestrian deaths from auto accidents reached a 41-year high in 2022, the latest data available. New federal rules proposed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) would make vehicles safer for drivers and for those walking along the street. Hi, I have 3 cats and a stray who stops by sometimes. I live in Tucson, Arizona, and am a retired teacher. I don't think of myself as a teacher, though, and haven't stepped foot in a classroom since I retired 4 years ago. I like reading and gardening. I majored in Painting and Drawing, but now I'm doing pottery. I enjoy going to art openings and craft festivals. Right now, I'm reading, "The New Tourist" by Paige McClanahan. It discusses the "Hippie Trail", which I caught the tail end of, after Iran put an end to the "Magic Bus". I tried a couple of cruises, but would never again participate in that awful, environment-destroying industry again. If there is anyone out there who can relate to me, I would love to hear from you. In many places they still have no fuel to keep their generators and cars going - the gas stations were destroyed.   It is gonna be getting real cold there very soon.  So think about them when the chill of the night occurs. Hurricane Helene didn’t just cause destruction in this area - it literally washed everything away or it buried it under feets of mud.   Many have shelter courtesy of the State and FEMA but they still need help with food and fuel as the recovery continues.  Those big trucks clearing the way to get the debris out of the way need fuel sources too.   Please give what you can to help- They need specific volunteers too.This is a central clearinghouse organization that puts out the word on what is needed and where - it is all listed - give funds or needed items.WESTERN CAROLINA EMERGENCY NETWORK  Thank you for remembering them.
