Published September 10, 2025. Polly Holliday, a versatile actor who found fame in the 1970s as sassy Southern waitress Flo on the sitcom Alice, died Tuesday. She was 88.Flo’s catchphrase — “Kiss my grits!” — became an indelible part of American pop culture during Alice’s TV run from 1976 to 1985. The character also earned Holliday four Emmy nominations — three for her work on Alice and one for her spin-off series Flo — along with Golden Globe wins in 1979 and 1980. CelebrateWhenever I go to the ER because of too much buildup of ammonia, I become delirious—at least that’s what my wife tells me, I however, don’t remember anything either about the calamitous onset at home or the continued havoc at the ER. My inability to recall unpleasant events since childhood occurs quite frequently. For years, my relatives like to talk about how I repeatedly ran away when my mother tried to discipline me—it took a long time for her to catch me. Another whopping example supposedly involved my grandmother. Every time my parents visited her, I greeted her with kicks to her shins. I guess it’s only human nature to blot out traumatic experiences, according to many psychological studies. But it is frustrating at times to accept other people’s version of events, especially when it sheds an unflattering light or bleak scenario. It is comforting to have a delete button in my brain.  Thankfully, I can’t remember many of the life-threatening medical crises that I have experienced over the past year, even when my wife gives me the details of my near demise and its aftermath.Being oblivious to the dark side of my existence is a virtue. It’s never been in my nature to dwell on any of the traumas that confront me, so being able automatically to forget these horrors is a life-enhancing blessing.

GraceWhile I was waiting for my wife to join me at the Hawaii Theater, I saw a matronly middle-aged woman slightly limping across from me. Before she would be out of sight, I, perhaps indiscreetly, blurted out that I would be happy to walk on my own with her infirmity. The woman, hardly offended, stopped next to me and began a long discourse on the history of her arthritic hip flare ups. Wow! I have just been diagnosed with the same problem. She continued listing and describing some of her other arthritic concerns, ones similar to mine—from shoulders to knees. I reciprocated. When we finished conversing, she plodded onward.Talk about serendipity! As I got seated in the handicapped area of the theatre, I saw the same woman whom I had earlier met, sitting right next to me. ENGAGINGEvery day I am entranced (looking out from my lanai) to see configurations of white birds as they soar over the golf course and undulate toward the Koolau mountain range. Sometimes the birds en masse resemble a phalanx of warriors. Only in Hawaii It is fairly standard to see homeless people dragging shopping carts on their respective journeys around town. But what I witnessed a few days ago while I was ensconced in my car was truly priceless. An oversized shopping cart adjacent to the entrance of Longs Drugs was brimming with a stupendous concoction of bulging trash bags that rose at least six feet high. Soon a homeless person came to retrieve his possessions. Using a long coiled rope attached to a makeshift crossbow, he moved his belongings away from the drug store.  At first, he made little progress. But after spasmodically grunting, gasping, and lurching, the man managed to pull the massive cart to a stop light. He soon disappeared. I admired him for his perseverance and his ingenuity. Good Cheer GaloreI enjoy watching TV dramas. I have noticed that every time someone describes a potential mate, that person is routinely characterized, among other attributes, as funny. From my experience at least, as a child and as an adult whose default was being serious and working constructively, very few people (acquaintances, family, and friends) have been even remotely funny.Now in Hawaii, however, my wife and I have become attached to a couple of women whose conversation is consistently hilarious. I cherish their company so much that I have invited them to join my wife and me for our 56th wedding anniversary. It will be a hoot! I am not just a spectator. Although it is not my nature, I spontaneously laugh along with them.
