Published February 02, 2026. After a three-decade run that included such hits as “Losing My Religion,” “Man on the Moon” and “The One I Love,” popular rock band R.E.M. split in 2011. But its members never really retired. Guitarist Peter Buck, 69, has been especially busy since then, playing in numerous acts. What songs tell a story about historic events, places or people.  I'll start with a true favorite: Roads to Moscow- Al StewartFrom his 1973 Past, Present and Future album This song tells the story of the German invasion of Russia in WWII. Each verse  beautifully captures the different aspects of the conflict as seen through the eyes of a Russian soldier. When you listen, you can almost see the aspects of the campaign happening.

Many songwriters are inspired to write from events that happened to them or their band members. What are some that you know?  "Smoke on the Water" by Deep Purple -- written about the fire at the Montreux Switzerland, Frank Zappa concert, that Deep Purple's members were in the audience and they got safely out to a nearby restaurant and watched the smoke gather across Lake Geneva.

Name a song that honors Mother Nature! I'd like to start with: Here Comes The Sun 🌄    

Who were some of your favorite musical artists of the 80s? Michael Jackson? Madonna? Whitney Houston? Prince? Share a memory of listening to your favorite.

Today’s high schoolers and their grownup counterparts reminisce with lyrics and try to sing favorite songs. What music do teens and parents have in common? Lady Gaga? Boyz II Men? “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star”?   What songs could go on a cross-generational playlist?

There are many songs that are based on actual events. Some are more accurate than others.I'll start with The Rising by Bruce Springsteen

Money. Some of us are standing in long lines to get into stores to spend it.  And we can't forget that it's tax time, so some of us are getting those refunds and some of us are getting ready to ante up.  And all the while, investment values are bouncing around like out of control tennis balls.   Maybe it's the root of all evil, but that cookie jar cash stash is not such a bad thing.  Musicians sure have a lot to say about it.  How about some songs about money, or spending it, or shopping  with it (yay) , etc.?

Hi I read an article this morning about an art show in Miami and the beginning of the article made me think about all of the great art associated with rock and music.  Album covers, concert posters, the photography work of people like Linda Eastman McCartney and thousands of others. Beatles music has been playing for more than fifty years. Their songs are as relevant today as they were in the 1960’s. As an avid Beatles fan, I am always interested in what others consider their best song. I’ll start by saying “All You Need is Love” is my personal favorite. They have so many wonderful songs so I know this post won’t dissappoint!   Kathy T.

Thought this could be a fun topic 🙂   I will start with You Give Love a Bad Name by Bon Jovi.

The 1960's boasts a vast array of music styles and genres throughout the decade. Many genres crossed and blurred lines, and new sub-genres or were created. Throughout the 60's, we had a variety of pop, rock, Motown / R&B and soul. There were all of those tragedy songs, muscle car songs, and surf songs playing on the radio. Then came The Beatles and the British invasion. Folk music evolved into folk-rock, and Bob Dylan became one of the most influential songwriters of the decade and beyond. Folk music became a popular genre for the counterculture and protest songs (anti-war, civil rights). Folk-rock segued into psychedelic rock and songs of the drug culture. Elvis made a comeback in '68. Later in the decade, progressive rock began to merge various genres and styles, including classical music.
