Senior User Friendly Commputer

I am looking for suggestions for types/brands of computers that offer simple features for seniors. I have a senior parent that uses the computer for emails, looking up things on the internet and occasional letter writing - nothing else. The current computer needs updating and/or replacement and technical support has often left this senior in tears. Not looking for online classes because that would only confuse. Your input would help.

    I've used Mac/OS, Windows, and Linux and I don't think any of them are simple to use. I have a older Chromebook and I think that would remove some of the complexity. It uses a browser-based operating system. Your options to load applications is limited so if you play games (other than browser games) or you like to install a lot of applications, it is not a good choice. It is capable of doing a good job with the things you mentioned (email, letters, internet browsing). My Chromebook is older and runs too slowly. If you go this direction, I would look for something that runs reasonably fast and feels good to you and your parent. Read more about it, if you haven't already, and see what you think.

    Probably the thing is to use something like an Apple iPad. (Or a similar Android-based tablet.)

    This is probably as close to the "internet toaster" that was a concept bandied about 20+ years ago.

    You can get external keyboards so you can actually do touch typing. I don't know if an external mouse can be a thing with these, typically they have touchscreens.

    I won't give up my laptop computer but my iPad Mini and a couple smartphones have their place for surfing, reading media, etc. 

     

    This is probably the best way to go for many, probably most, users, especially non-tech savvy seniors. And this seems to be how most people access the web for their personal needs. Only geeks (like me) are still using installed desktop applications for personal use.

      I would love to hear if you found something senior friendly. My stepmom is early onset demenita and always complains about the laptop. My dad is 88 and loves his laptop but I can see changes needed in the near future. I saw MyGait computers for seniors on a google search. It looks and sounds good, but I can't find recommendations from AARP except on MyGait's website.
