For many an original song that they love cannot and will not ever be duplicated by a cover, but there are many songs that have been done equally (debatebly) well by others..

So do you have favorites?

What are your favorite covers of favorite songs?

When Kenny Rogers & Dolly Parton did the Bee Gees' song Islands in the Stream as a duet, they really knocked it out of the park.

Not sure who is covering who, since Carole King originally wrote (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman for Aretha to record, and both of their versions are great in their own styles. But if you haven't seen this video of Aretha paying tribute to Carole at the Kennedy Center in 2015, you've gotta check it out: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=XHsnZT7Z2yQ

The End Of The World was done by so many people; I don't know the original. But I like the Herman's Hermits version.

I don't know if this counts. Simon & Garfunkel wrote this for another band and they never really played it themselvs:

Correct, Paul Simon wrote the song with Bruce Woodley of The Seekers, but S&G never recorded it. They did sing it in concert where it was recorded and later added to a compilation album (Old Friends). This is from the 1967 concert at Lincoln Center.

Many covers of this song.  I prefer Merrilee Rush's  Angel Of The Morning

Great rendition, I'm sure Grace Slick, Jorma, Jack, and the rest would be very pleased.

Okay, here's one that y'all may not know is a cover song. I didn't either until I saw it on an AXS-TV program called Hits That Were Covers. A lot of music professionals didn't know it was a cover either. This one got the no. 1 ranking on the show.

Black Magic Woman - Santana (1970 cover)

So here's the original - Fleetwood Mac with Peter Green (Green wrote it) 1968

Absolutely great cover pick. People forget how great a guitar player that Peter Green was. Everybody knows Santana is.

I read a lot of comments on youtube by deep-seated, die-hard, blues fans who know the Green version. A lot of them think that Santana went too far with his arrangement, doing Green a great injustice.

On the other hand, Santana plays it the way he would have written it, and I think that is why a lot of folks like me think that it's a Santana song. And of course, Santana had the hit that's still playing around the world.

I just found this cool cover of All Along the Watchtower. Played by Czech guitarist Lukás Halfar, while riding a skateboard through the city.

I recently watched a replay of the John Lennon 75th Birthday Concert (Dec 2015) on AXS-TV. One of the most amazing performances that evening was this cover of Watching the Wheels by Aloe Blacc.

IMO, there are maybe a handful of bands that could ever attempt to cover Deep Purple, especially MkII with Ian Gillan.  Metallica is one of those bands, and here are a couple of really good ones!

Smoke on the Water  (I like the way that they revved it up and gave it the Metallica treatment).

When a Blind Man Cries (from the album ReMachined,  A Tribute to Deep Purple Machine Head)

James, Kirk, and the boys great job on the vocals and guitar work. Lars was a bit busy with the machine gun tom toms. All in all a great cover. That band still rocks. JM2422
