Hello, Front Porchers!

I wanted to post this greeting much earlier, but I knew Dave would be setting up this new thread. So I waited til now.

Anyway,

to one and all here! I know a coupla weeks ago, I felt the first evidences of fall coming. And now it begins in earnest. Cooler temperatures and later dawns. The vibrant green leaves in some of the trees are slowing giving way to yellow and orange and soon brown. But as much as I anticipated the arrival of Spring and reveled in the throes of Summer, I am just as pleased to see the advent of Fall--mainly because I'm still here and I am happy that creation is still making itself evident as we slowly move into another season; what I like to call "the season of rest."

Early morning coffee will sometimes yield to hot, hot chocolate with marshmellows or whipped cream...

Ummmmmm. Yum!!! (Oh, please ignore the snow in the pic above. I don't mean to imply anything at all by it.) I just like hot chocolate in the colder months.

Anyway, everybody please, please stay snug, and warm, and above all stay safe! Enjoy this season as much as you have the others gone by....

MsStretch, I don't know about the Mummers in Asbury Park. However, there's a King Neptune parade. I haven't been able to go yet, but I have to Google to put date in my calendar for next year.

Some of the volunteers from Food not Bombs went to Florida to bring supplies. . I am staying in Eatontown this trip. But, I did have some items for the trip. Plus, my friends helped me straighten out the unit at Fort Monmouth.. I really appreciate their help. I may have to ask for help on a weekly basis and I will.

History of Labor Day

Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.

Labor Day 2019

On September 2, 2019, the U.S. Department of Labor celebrates and honors the greatest worker in the world – the American worker. Labor Day 2019 is the 125th anniversary of Labor Day beingcelebrated as a national holiday.

Labor Day: What it Means

Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.

Labor Day Legislation

The first governmental recognition came through municipal ordinances passed in 1885 and 1886. From these, a movement developed to secure state legislation. The first state bill was introduced into the New York legislature, but the first to become law was passed by Oregon on February 21, 1887. During 1887, four more states – Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York – created the Labor Day holiday by legislative enactment. By the end of the decade Connecticut, Nebraska, and Pennsylvania had followed suit. By 1894, 23 more states had adopted the holiday, and on June 28, 1894, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories.

Founder of Labor Day

More than a century after the first Labor Day observance, there is still some doubt as to who first proposed the holiday for workers.

Some records show that Peter J. McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and a co-founder of the American Federation of Labor, was first in suggesting a day to honor those "who from rude nature have delved and carved all the grandeur we behold."

But Peter McGuire's place in Labor Day history has not gone unchallenged. Many believe that Matthew Maguire, a machinist, not Peter McGuire, founded the holiday. Recent research seems to support the contention that Matthew Maguire, later the secretary of Local 344 of the International Association of Machinists in Paterson, N.J., proposed the holiday in 1882 while serving as secretary of the Central Labor Union in New York. What is clear is that the Central Labor Union adopted a Labor Day proposal and appointed a committee to plan a demonstration and picnic.

The First Labor Day

The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union. The Central Labor Union held its second Labor Day holiday just a year later, on September 5, 1883.

By 1894, 23 more states had adopted the holiday, and on June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed a law making the first Monday in September of each year a national holiday.

A Nationwide Holiday

Women's Auxiliary Typographical Union The form that the observance and celebration of Labor Day should take was outlined in the first proposal of the holiday — a street parade to exhibit to the public "the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations" of the community, followed by a festival for the recreation and amusement of the workers and their families. This became the pattern for the celebrations of Labor Day. Speeches by prominent men and women were introduced later, as more emphasis was placed upon the economic and civic significance of the holiday. Still later, by a resolution of the American Federation of Labor convention of 1909, the Sunday preceding Labor Day was adopted as Labor Sunday and dedicated to the spiritual and educational aspects of the labor movement.

The character of the Labor Day celebration has changed in recent years, especially in large industrial centers where mass displays and huge parades have proved a problem. This change, however, is more a shift in emphasis and medium of expression. Labor Day addresses by leading union officials, industrialists, educators, clerics, and government officials are given wide coverage in newspapers, radio, and television.

The vital force of labor added materially to the highest standard of living and the greatest production the world has ever known and has brought us closer to the realization of our traditional ideals of economic and political democracy. It is appropriate, therefore, that the nation pays tribute on Labor Day to the creator of so much of the nation's strength, freedom, and leadership – the American worker.

Good morning, everyone!

Happy Labor Day!

It's pouring right now. Thunderstorms are going through and they intend on visiting all day. Forecast said this afternoon through the night, but ater I had my coffee and breakfast on the porch, I pulled all the chairs right up to the table, away from the screens and am glad I did since the storms arrived way early.

Hoping it takes a break so I can get to the restaurant relatively dry this afternoon. The game night girls are meeting for burgers just so if anyone asks, we can all say we did something Labor Day weekend.

Woke up to the news which is so depressing...another shooting, devasting hurricane, etc. Geeze!

Good morning to everyone on the Front Porch on this first Wednesday of September 2019. I'm hoping everyone is safe and well!

When major hurricanes, tornadoes and other devastating storms strike the U.S., volunteers become a key component of Operation Blessing’s and other groups like the Red Cross bring disaster relief efforts. From serving hot meals and handing out bags of relief to helping residents salvage precious belongings and aiding in debris removal and cleanup, OBI volunteers are critical to bringing relief in real time!

Operation Blessing’s U.S. Disaster Relief Team has been monitoring Hurricane Dorian very closely. This monster storm has been upgraded to a Category 5 hurricane threatening the southern East Coast of the U.S. Coastal residents are bracing for powerful winds, heavy rain, flash flooding, and storm surge. Several of our southern states have declared a state of emergency.

Our advanced team has already deployed with truckloads of food, supplies, equipment, and a shower trailer. They will continue communicating with various local and state emergency officials, church partners, and threatened communities as we prepare for the potential impacts of the storm.

There are many other groups that offer help to victims of natural disasters like Dorian.

Good morning to everyone on the Front Porch on this first Friday of September!

We had a great Labor day weekend with our family at our Timeshare at Grand Geneva resort in the Lake Geneva area Wisconsin. We had our three daughters and two of there husbands.

Our youngest daughter Emma will be getting married to her fiance Andrew on September 15th.

My son-in-law Dean and I took out Andrew golfing for a bachelor party Sunday morning. When we finished golf we had a cookout with additional family members.

We had nice weather so Mary and our oldet daughter were able to get out walking. Dean and Janice went for a couple of long bike rides while others went to the gym or the pool.

This has been a great place to go for a long weekend before the daughters go back to their teaching jobs on Tuesday. Mary and I stayed an extra day to go out for our 53rd anniversary dinner.

Hi, Peeps, Remember when we always used to say, "TGIF?"

Don't need to say it when you are retired because every day is a Friday!

It's cloudy, dreary, and looks like it will rain any minute now thanks to the edges of Dorian, but we're safe. At least it's cool! We'll be lucky if we hit 70 today, but that's fine with me. I did have to break down and put the AC on one day this past week when we hit 90. I'm hoping we don't get any real rain since tonight is one of our plays and I don't want to get soaked on the way in or out.

So 2 of our friends came back from a vacation in the Ukraine on Wednesday and were not able to get home to Myrtle Beach from Newark airport. They spent a couple of days with another friend and hope to get out this afternoon...they do have their boarding passes, so I'll find out later if they took off and what they got home to. Hopefully no damage!

I stopped at Starbucks today and tried the nitro cold brew. I had it with the sweet cream and it's really good. You don't need to add anything to it. Very smooth. A little expensive though!

Hoping none of you had to evacuate. Stay safe and enjoy this first full weekend of the month. N.

Miserably hot here folks. We hit 96 yesterday after a morning low of 64. Looking at 90s for about 10 days but the nights are getting cooler. Life is hard enough without excessive heat. Mom's companion is in the hospital again and life is tough here.

My new desktop computer arrived today, so my work is cut out for me -- setting up, transferring files (have everything on externals, but want to double-check), familiarizing myself with new OS.

Good evening, Front Porch Peepers!

I know it's late, but this is the first time in a long time that I have actually been able to login into the AARP site and message board. But I'm still out here...kickin' and screamin' and spittin' and slobberin'.

Me? I've been working on my "fall" cleaning; working in the garage and trying to sort out and organize stuff in the basement. In fact, I've been driving around town with a huge garbage bag full of clothes for the Salvation Army donation box. Just haven't been by one lately. By the time I do get to the box, I just might have another bag to add to the one I already have packed. Anyway, my intentions were good and I know this week will be the week....

Today has been a day of mixed weather. This morning it was so hot, I could hardly breath when I first opened the door to do yardwork. It was so hot in fact, I decided not to mow and spent a few hours cleaaning out some boxes of storage in the garage. I got a lot done and without too much sweat.

After the great heat of the morning came thunder and a heavy downpour in the late afternoon. I slept through much of it. As a matter of fact, as I remember, the thunder was the last sound I heard as I drifted off to sleep for my afternoon nap.

Anyway, I hope everyone on Our Front Porch is well and doing well. Until next time.

Good morning, Porch Peeps,

It's sunny for now but we are expecting thunderstorms later this afternoon.

A friend is up from Texas and I'm meeting her for lunch. I will take my umbrella just in case.

We had a thunderstorm around 3:30 this AM. It woke me up long enough to close the windows partially. As of now, windows are still open...hoping it's not as hot and humid as yesterday. Tomorrow it's only supposed to be in the 70's. What a roller coaster! Of course the grass guys arrived at 8:00 to cut the wet grass. I'll never understand that.

All the tech stuff you guys talk about just has me at the end of the runway watching the planes fly overhead. I don't even know how to switch browsers! Actually I'm afraid to do anything to the computer for fear it will screw something up. Still having the long running scripts thing on this website page/topic only. I have to fiddle around until I can finally arrive and post.

Seems odd that I have the games back and the ability to post photos back and now this happens. It has to be AARP since I have no trouble elsewhere.

Think I’ve been around them too long🤣.

The good news is everyone starts out nervous with the darned things.I was with first build - In 1970 maybe.

Be Happy Windows 10 is forgiving, earlier operating systems not so much. Haven’t had blue or black screen in years.

And most times when ‘puters get confused now, just a reboot and prayer fixes them.🤣

To change browsers, download a new one. And just use it, I have 6-8 on my computer/laptops and phone.

If you really like the new browser, just keep using it.

I use one for most work, others for different sites.

Good morning to everyone on the Front Porch on this Friday the 13th. Golfing was gotten in between some rain drops. We had strong storms and heavy rains across Wisconsin last night. Many low areas had flooding last night and today. Hoping everyone has a great weekend.

A full moon on Friday the 13th is an extremely rare occurrence, according to the Farmers' Almanac. It reports that this will be the first full moonvisible across the U.S. on Friday the 13th since Oct. 13, 2000. The next one isn't expected to happen again for another 30 years—on Aug. 13, 2049.

It’s time to get witchy. This Friday the 13thbrings us a full moon — the first full moon to fall on a Friday the 13th in 13 years. Spooked? Don’t be. According to some witches and astrologers, the number 13 is auspicious — we have 13 full moons and 13 menstrual cycles in a year. And Friday is associated with the goddess Venus. So a full moon that falls on Friday the 13th is a special, powerful time.

This full moon is known as the Harvest Moon, because it occurs during the harvest and near the autumnal equinox (which this year falls on September 23). This year's Harvest Moon is in Pisces, a water signassociated with emotions, intuition, and artistic inclination. It's also a micromoon, meaning it will appear to be slightly smaller than usual because of where it is in its orbit (the opposite of a supermoon).

Good Morning, All on the porch,

Quite a change in the temperature today! After having to have the AC on yesterday, it was 57 this AM when I woke up. Right now it is very cloudy and 63. We won't get much higher than the low 70's today if we even get there. Fine by me!

First thing this morning was an ear doctor appointment. That went fine and I can hear with unclogged ears again!

Hope you all have a super weekend. I've got nothing on tap but am open to anything. Right now...more coffee and later...wine.

Don’t feel the need for Air Conditioning now and happy I removed the window unit last month.

Awoke to temps in the 40’s rudely, by the call of snowblower guy coming to pick it up. He can play with new belts and a new tube in the tire. I’d really rather not.😎

Presently 62* and sunny, don’t expect anything higher than 70’s for some time to come.

And on that cheery note, need to play in garage. Need to clean it out, in preparation for eventual firewood season.

I know it’s coming, just don’t want to rush into it. 🤣 70* beats all heck out of -65* on a wicked cold and snowy day.

Still alive in the sweltering heat, will be 96 today. Mom is in respite care, boy was she mad at me when they took her away! My head aches and my BP is up. I have been off BP meds for 8+ years and I do not want to go back on them. I begged hospice for respite and got it! Heading to NE Ga tomorrow (Deliverance country no more, it is full of Home Depots) for a day of fun with senior group. It will be fun and hopefully theraputic. Always fun to watch a bunch of oldsters with their noses in their cell phones for hours. My buddy and I do not do that we talk!

@DaveMcK Great pictures as always and congrats to Emma & Andrew. @Frozenoem Are they still bleeding you dry? How is Chelli? My Tessie had a bit of chicken jerky get stuck in her throat, she did spit it out, but not before I misplaced a pair of glasses I have managed to hang on to for 1 & 1/2 years.
