The only option I see is an auto renewal at 1 year.  How can I renew and get the 5 year discount?

It's so much cheaper to just go for the Life Membership. The only way to enroll for Life Membership is to call the AARP 800 number.

I enrolled for Life for only $200 and my expiration date now is Dec 2800.  I have even given Life memberships to my adult children. They can be members as young as 18.

Didn't know they had a lifetime option. That would be even better.  One and done.  Just have to figure out if I need to let my membership expire before getting multi year or lifetime.  Currently the only option is a year auto renewal.   Thank you for the lifetime idea.

If nothing has changed since 2004, you can call and they'll prorate for lifetime membership...
