On November 3rd, World Jellyfish Day celebrates this invertebrate that has been on Earth for millions of years. The day also encourages us to learn more about these unique aquatic animals.
Despite its name, the jellyfish isn’t actually a fish. This is because a fish’s anatomy centers around its spine. A jellyfish, on the other hand, doesn’t even have a spine. In fact, jellyfish don’t have gills, a brain, heart, bones, or blood. Instead, a jellyfish is made up of 95 percent water. They also have skin, through which they absorb oxygen. The body of the jellyfish is called a bell. A jellyfish swims by contracting and relaxing the muscles around this bell. Their tentacles contain stingers, which protect them from prey.

Here are some interesting facts about jellyfish:
[AI Overview]
Composition
Jellyfish are made up of at least 95% water, with only about 5% solid matter.
Lifespan
Jellyfish lifespans vary by species, with some living only a few days, others up to a year, and a few living up to 20 years.
Immortality
The Turritopsis dohrnii species of jellyfish can essentially become new again when threatened by undergoing cellular transdifferentiation.
Predation
Some jellyfish can startle predators by producing bright flashes of light, releasing a glowing tentacle, or sending thousands of glowing particles into the water.
Tentacles
While jellyfish tentacles are indeed slippery, they can sting other jellyfish and themselves if they come into contact.
Age
Jellyfish are older than dinosaurs, with some scientists believing they may have existed as far back as 700 million years ago.
Edible
Some species of jellyfish are edible and are used as an ingredient in various dishes.
Body systems
While jellyfish lack complex systems like circulatory and respiratory systems, they do have a simple nervous system that allows them to respond to stimuli.
Size
Jellyfish can range in size from a few centimeters to over two meters.
Reproduction
Jellyfish have a complex life cycle involving both sexual and asexual reproduction.
Bioluminescence
Many jellyfish species are bioluminescent, meaning they can produce their own light.
Ecological Importance: Jellyfish play important roles in marine ecosystems, both as predators and prey.

Don't be jelly, be the jelly. 😉
Thanks for the Read. I was relieved it was not a Prevagen commercial 😎.
When I was a kid we would vacation with my grandparents on The Gulf Coast. Sometimes jellyfish blooms would get stranded at low tide and the sandbars would be covered with Jellyfish. At night we would throw handfuls of sand across the sandbars and the Jellyfish would luminesce in a pale green streak where the sand landed on them.
@EricC28201, just got to say that your recollections are so vivid, your memory is amazing! Maybe my posts are triggers, and that's a good thing, right? So, I checked out that Prevagen (Jellyfish) Commercial you mentioned, and somebody needs to tell these 'professionals,' that jellyfish have no brains! 😂 I screenshot their YT page for amusement. See below. Have a good weekend.
Wish I could find a video of the luminescing thing.
Rereading the Prevagen thing, it comes off a bit sarcastic and cynical...No offense intended...it's just a joke about Prevagen...Jellyfish Juice increases brain power?...we've almost circled all the way back to snake oil.
