How do spades work as trump?

In Spades, the spade suit always functions as a trump suit. Any spade card will beat any card from another suit, no matter what its rank. However, this won’t work until spades are “broken,” or when a player can’t follow suit. Once broken, spades beat all other suits. Use them wisely to win key tricks!
