That is true, @mstrees it was the first Father’s Day Service at a church in Fairmont, West Va.. but was a one time thing.  

 

It had not gone National at that time. Someone else spearheaded the effort and continued to do so to make it a National event, and then many years later it was recognized as a National Holiday. 

The question here said celebration, so the Church service sermon was not an event, but a remembrance to honor the hundreds of fathers killed in the Monongah Mining Disaster the year prior.  It left about a thousand children fatherless.  The church service was a one time remembrance at the church .

 

Thank you for mentioning that, I learned a lot by trying to find out, and wouldn’t have known that tidbit.  I would imagine they try to claim it as their “first”, but in all actuality it wasn’t.  Fun stuff to read about though.
