Colonial Americans fed lobster to prisoners because it was so cheap

Lobster is one of those things you buy at fancy restaurants where waiters bring you baskets of artisanal bread and call you things like “Sir” and “Madam”. However, that was not always the case. In the colonial era of the United States of America, lobster was so abundant, easy to find, and cheap that it was simply cooked up and served to prisoners as their jail food. No word on if they got hot butter to dip it in, but we would bet against it.

      Lobsters are also called, 'Bottom Feeders.' They eat the muck on the floor. Yummo! 😉

        I'm from Maine and I detest lobster. Very hard to eat and way over priced. I'm probably going to lose my "native mainer card" if this gets out.

          Your secrets' safe with me. I remember when I lived in Dover Fox Croft, ME, my Grampy brought home live lobster, have all of us gather 'round to listen to the lobsters 'screaming' when they hit the boiling water. I was very upset by it. To this day I am haunted. Sure, I've eaten lobster, blue crab, etc...later in life. I, too, thought it was overrated, messy, and of little-next to nothing nutritional value. Just murder. Hey! Why not let them have their watery adventures, and live a happy life.

            I often think of the first guy ever in the history of human kind to eat one of those things. Not the most appetizing looking creature out there. I guess he must have been REALLY hungry.

                Yuma County, Arizona, is the nation's winter lettuce capital, thanks to its recognition as the "sunniest place on earth." This county provides America with 90% of its leafy greens from November through March and hosts its own veggie festival called "City of Yuma's Lettuce Festival" every year.

                  Rolling pastures and bright skies make for happy cows. The Golden State is the United States' #1 dairy producer, churning out tons of butter, milk, and, of course, ice cream each year. Better yet: 99% of California dairy farms are family-owned!

                  Wisconsin is #1 in cheese production!  Just saying!

                    Summer @ 10:58 this AM, have yet to turn on my AC, or wear a pair of shorts this season. 

                     

                    Now come to think of it (counting yesterday & today) only have hit 80 degrees 3 days this season.

                    You've got the Rocky Mountain State to thank for your cookout favorite — the cheeseburger. Drive-in owner Louis E. Ballast trademarked the "cheeseburger" on March 5, 1935. He never formally enforced his trademark, and the Humpty Dumpty Barrel restaurant, where the cheeseburger was created, no longer stands, but you can find a stone carving on the side of the road that designates the site of its birth.

                      In 2009, the country's first state declared peach pie its official dessert. The campaign was started by fifth and sixth graders who chose the dessert because of Delaware's peach farming history.
