Almost anything by Hank Williams.   No less than Elvis Presley called I'm So Lonesome I could Cry, the saddest song he had ever heard.     Its just the sights and sounds from his back yard but it packs a punch.   But don't forget These Men With Broken Hearts,  or May You Never Be Alone Like Me, or Lost on the River,  Long Gone Lonesome Blues and many more.

Lefty Frizzell fell into a depressive hole and with his song writing partner Sanger Shaffer wrote "I Never Go Around Mirrors"  It has been said that this song could bring a tear to a statue, especially when Keith Whitley sang it.   This was Whitley's favorite country song and he would sing it at the drop of a hat.

@RossM846371  - Have you heard this version of I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry, by Gary Morris? It gets me every time. 😭😭😭 A lot of people have covered this song, but no one sings it like he does.

I Dreamed About Mama Last Night:  Hank Williams; Johnny Cash    (The song, in my opinion, walks a fine line between sad and saccharine, but either way will bring a tear to the eye).

Another master of musical melancholia is the incomparable Julie Miller.   She is a true one of a kind.   Her own voice is a matter of taste but those songs will get you in the soul.   These include Broken Things,  Orphan train, (there are several fine songs called orphan train so look up Julie's, and All My Tears and the most famous I Still Cry.

I'm Blowin' Away:  Bonnie Raitt    (lyrics include, "I've been romanced and dined and danced/Crazy nights and wild times/But life has lost its mystery/And love is blind and cannot find me")  And those are the upbeat lyrics! Great job by Bonnie Raitt.
