On December 25, 1954 Bing Crosby’s “White Christmas” entered the Billboard Pop chart for the 11th time. His rendition has sold over 100 million copies word wide. It was the largest selling single in music history until it was surpassed by Elton John’s “Candle In The Wind 1997” tribute to Princess Diana. On this day in 1995, actor, singer, and TV host Dean Martin died. On the same day in 2008 actress, singer and cabaret star Eartha Kitt died. In addition to being the first “Catwoman” opposite Adam West, she is perhaps best known for the Christmas song “Santa Baby.” And on December 25, 2016 we lost George Michael. First catapulted to fame with Wham, he then experienced significant solo success, including songs like “I Want Your Sex” and “Faith,” the latter the theme for today’s blog, songs with the word “Faith” in the title. It was actually a bit invasive, so much so, I became nearly insane (j/k). I think songs that get conjured up in ones' mind, and are on repeat in your brain-o, are indicative to something important. And, so it seems, I have no choice but to listen to the worm sing.)

Well, we can't leave the guys out can we?  Who are your favorite male singers of any genre?  I'm not talking bands here but solo artists.  Of course, if they were in a band and also went solo you can still name them such as Jon Bon Jovi or Richie Sambora both of whom are members of the group Bon Jovi but have also gone solo.  Here's some of mine from times past to the present: Frank Sinatra, Perry Como, Dean Martin, Brook Benton, Jerry Butler, Conway Twitty, Johnny Cash, Charley Pride, Johnny Tillotson, Donovan, Eddie Cochran, Gene McDaniels, Glen Yarborough, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, John Fogerty, John Mellencamp, Eric Clapton, and so many more. You may also name your favorite male singer from a band but not the band itself.  For instance, we all know that Diane loves the band Aerosmith but she would say Steven Tyler.

My follow-up blog to my 3 blogs sharing playlists of songs featuring instruments in rock and pop music intrinsic to our bodies, hand clapping, finger snapping, and whistling, highlights an extension of one of these instruments, in the form of castanets held in hands, somewhat a variation of clapping, if you will, believe it or not featured in some prominent rock and pop songs. Who knew castanets, commonly used in Spanish flamenco music, would make their way into rock and pop, right under our noses. We’ve oft heard them but not acknowledged them, thus not given them credit where credit is due. One you start listening for them, you will hear them more and more. A lot of songs are written about dreams and dreaming. How about listing the song titles we know about dreams, dreaming, dreamed, etc., and even nightmares, if you can think of one! 

My third blog in a series featuring instruments in rock and pop music intrinsic to our bodies, following hand clapping and finger snapping, highlights my playlist of whistling prominent in rock and pop songs, along with some instrumental TV and movie themes. Some fantastic songs prominently featuring whistling include Billy Joel’s “The Stranger,” Guns N’ Roses “Patience,” Peter Gabriel’s “Games Without Frontiers,” John Lennon’s “Jealous Guy” and “Beautiful Boy,” Otis Redding’s “Dock Of The Bay,” Paul Simon’s “Me & Julio Down By The Schoolyard,” The J. My follow-up blog posts featuring instruments in rock and pop music intrinsic to our bodies highlights my second playlist using hands, this time finger snapping rather than hand-clapping, though some songs include both. So in addition to hand clapping to keep rhythm, finger snapping has also found a place over the years in rock and pop music. August 1973, now 51 years ago, “Travelin’ Prayer” was released as the third single off the album whose title song is little known or appreciated in pop music, “Piano Man.” In all seriousness, while dwarfed by the massively successful career-defining song by Billy Joel, “Travelin’ Prayer” is one of my favorite little-known Joel songs. It features perhaps his best honkey-tonk piano work, fantastic banjo, and even some killer mouth harp 🤣. The song provides the theme for today’s playlist, rock and pop songs featuring banjo.
