Stop Beneficiary Accounts from Counting towards Medicaid Assets for Seniors

I live in RI (age 65), and my brother (age63) are beneficiaries on our aunt’s money market account.  I have received Medicaid for over 10 years, but now that I am 65, I am no longer eligible because her account is being considered as my asset. I have no access to these funds until her death.  It seems unfair. I am on a very limited income.  I would like to see AARP push for a legislative change in Beneficiary Accounts being counted as assets for seniors.

Hi @ChristineM773333

Thank you for reaching out and sharing your concerns. Rules regarding Medicaid eligibility and countable assets can vary by state, so we’re unable to provide guidance on your individual situation. We recommend contacting the AARP Rhode Island State Office, which may be able to connect you with state-specific resources. They are also the best place to share your concerns about how these rules affect older Rhode Islanders.
