Medicare Open Enrollment Is Here! Resources to Help You Make Informed Decisions

Medicare Open Enrollment runs October 15 through December 7, 2026.  Let's talk about it!

If you're enrolled in Medicare, now is a good time to review your coverage and make sure it still meets your health care needs and budget for 2027.

Even if you're happy with your current plan, it's worth taking another look. Costs, prescription drug coverage, provider networks, and benefits can change from year to year.

Making Medicare decisions for ourselves is hard enough, and many of us who are caregiving are also helping loved one make their Medicare decisions (or making them for them if they are unable and we have the appropriate powers of attorney). It’s a lot of pressure!

The good news is that AARP has GREAT resources to help you understand your options and make informed decisions. Not sure how to get started - check out these resources:

A few things to consider as you review your coverage:

  • Are your doctors and preferred hospitals still covered?
  • Are your prescription medications covered, and have their costs changed?
  • Have your premiums, deductibles or out-of-pocket expenses changed?
  • Does your current plan still meet your needs?

Please share your thoughts, questions, comments and tips for each other!

Medicare decisions can feel overwhelming, and sometimes hearing from others who have been through the process can help.

Are you reviewing your Medicare coverage this year? What questions do you have, or what tips would you share with someone navigating Open Enrollment?

Share your thoughts and experiences below. Your insights may help another community member!

Remember: Open Enrollment ends December 7, 2026. Any coverage changes made during this period generally take effect January 1, 2027.

Amy @agoyer , can you ask your Medicare Expert where I can get some help with figuring out the best way to cover my dental needs for 2027?

I have Original Medicare.

Had been self paying at the Dental Practice I have been using for 3 years with discounts. Was suppose to have my next 6-month dental cleaning in February 2027. Found out on Monday while checking their Google Reviews, permanently closed. Have yet to hear from them. Left two voicemail messages.

Lol, stressing & needing some guidance. Decision about maybe getting Dental Insurance & finding NEW dentist.

Thanks,

Nicole 🤗💛

Thanks AARP Jen @Jen . AARP Expert Amy @agoyer had said it was okay for me to "ask" questions AFTER "reading" the resources she posted. I am on a "limited" budget & CANNOT "afford" the Medicare Advantage she posted about.

I am planning to check dentist(s) near me here in Virginia to see WHO is "accepting" NEW patients.

One of them have several lawsuits, so will be "skipping" them. It is a franchise of Aspen Dental.

Then try to setup a FREE Consultation so I can ask "questions" about SCHEDULING my 6-month cleaning for February 2027. Since it will be a 1st visit, CONCERNED about cost of x-rays. That is WHY I wanted to look into maybe getting Dental Insurance. 🤔

Still in SHOCK & still ZERO from OLD dentist. Hopefully I will be able to stop by their OLD office to obtain COPIES of the 3 years of being with them. Missing them already. Gave me "discounts" & just a really nice team. 😞

Take care,

Nicole 💛🤗

It’s important to review your coverage every year but many enrollees also need to review their insurance options during Open Season with what is being offered as a Retiree Benefit from your union/retiree service. I’ve seen other federal retirees Opt Out of a plan being offered by their exchange. Once you retire and Opt Out of a Federal Plan you can never go back.

Just an FYI - Medciare.com is updating the medicare D formularies on October 26 so everyone needs to make sure they check their plans and future plan choices (even if you have already chosen) after that that as your costs may change.

It makes a LOT of sense to check your  medicare D every year. In 6 years I have changed 4 times as the costs to me were lower than what I was on. Saved a lot of money that way.

Another tip - open the costs of drugs at each pharmacy you chose on the medicare plan finder as you may see within a plan some drugs are cheaper at one pharmacy and some at another.

Caution when using an agent to help with this. Agents earn their income from commissions. More and more medicare D plans are becoming non-commissionable. That means to help you they make no money (and it is illegal to tip them for helping you). As a result some agents aren’t helping people, others are only mentioning plans that still pay them (so you may miss the cheapest one) and, of course, no agent is licensed to sell all plans anyway (they have to jump through a lot of hoops to sell a plan, be it D, supplements or advantage plans (C). It would be prudent to check your plan and costs on medicare.gov

@CBtoo , one of my "concerns" with 2027 is the price of gas & distance to pharmacy. I luv getting my "refills" at Kroger when I shop for groceries & gas up. Yes, my 3 meds (2 blood pressure, 1 chlolestral) maybe cheaper at ANOTHER pharmacy but further.

Anyway, I will make a "decision" on November 1st 2026 about my Standalone Part D with Wellcare. Been luving ZERO premiums & ZERO med costs with them for 2 years. 👍

Where can I view rate increase history for these plans? (In my case, Plan G in North Carolina.) Thanks!

Amy @agoyer , I will make time to read everything. I have been very "lazy" in Retirement but KNOW this time frame is "short". NO time to procrastinate & miss the deadline. Have a GREAT WEEKEND, Nicole 🤗💛

AARP Expert Amy @agoyer , so glad you posted this. Lol, I have been staying out of the Medicare Forum due to a member I guess meaning well - but comes across as abrasive. If you are going to be answering questions, YES - I have one. Thanks, Nicole 🤗💛
