Joyful ObservationYesterday in our car, my wife used her Bluetooth device to play some melodic cantorial chanting. At a red-light stop on the outskirts of Waikiki, I noticed a nondescript man in a vehicle next to ours. He was moving his upper body as if in sync with the Hebrew music that I found so entrancing. At first glance, the man’s rhythmic bobbing up and down reminded me of the ritual of a devout Jew who would reverently mumble to himself while praying (davening) whether it be in a synagogue or on public transportation.Of course the man in the car might have been moving his body for a variety of reasons unrelated to the music enhanced by my Bose speakers. Nonetheless, I’d like to make him an honorary member of the tribe. Serendipity is alive and well in Waikiki.

TransformationWhile I was enjoying watching and listening to a spirited rendition of Verdi’s Requiem included in my subscription to the Met on Demand, I remembered the first time I had encountered that requiem. As a teenager, I loved symphonies but despised opera and other types of choral works. But my father, an aficionado of all forms of classical music, one day at his friend’s house tried to introduce me to Verdi’s Requiem. He put me in a back room, started the record player, locked the door, and left me without saying an encouraging word. I valiantly sought to find some merit in the Requiem, but I had a visceral distaste for the recording from the redundant beginning until the anti-climactic ending. Of course, being trapped in that room added to my anxiety. Although I wanted to please my father after he unlocked the door, all I could do is crack my knuckles and bitterly sigh. He had miserably failed to achieve his goal. I hated Verdi’s Requiem with a passion.Go figure! As an adult,

1st season of this show and it definitely has my attention - not just the plot but the writing style and the long list of characters who are great in their various roll playing.In most murder mysteries, you are looking for the “who done it”  but not so here - (10) episodes in and we are still trying to not only find out “who done It” but the WHO was murdered?  

We use to have a pretty good group discussing THE VOICE - but now I wonder where everybody has gone.SEASON 27 of the show and there is still no shortage of talent - In fact, this maybe the best year yet in the talent world of all different types of genres.    1st time I can remember that there were this vast style of singers moving on to the last steps of the process.  Has the show moved on from picking country so much?  Course, Blake has left but I still don’t think that is the reason - Judges this year are:   John Legend, Kelsea Ballerini, Michael Bublé, and Adam Levine. I like them all especially 2nd year judge Michael Buble’- WHO IS GONNA WIN?  Who is your choice?

A Surprising ConnectionToday, I browsed through one of the old brief storybooks that my daughter with the help of her children wrote and illustrated a decade before my wife and I settled in Hawaii. The booklet focused on my fictional alter ego, Schlemo, the snake who slithers into bunches of misadventures. The Evolution of Well-being                             Outside the rec center adjacent to my condo building, a thick multi branched tree no longer has any blooms. It is a barren eyesore that I feel needs to be chopped down, but I (wheel-chair bound and afraid of trespassing) have no influence over that bleak reminder of our mortality.  Today, however, I noticed clusters of small buds on all of the tree’s limbs, buds that presage a renewal of the surging life-giving force that reanimates nature. My Mother’s Wrath Revisited I loved playing stickball with my friends. Most of the time, my backyard was our default. When it was my turn to bat, I inadvertently tended to whack the ball onto the inaccessible roof that covered all of the apartments. Each time I did so, my mother had to reimburse the ball’s owner.
