Car rentals
Read the agreement with Routes Car Rental very carefully. I assumed their terms and conditions were the same as other companies, and I did not notice that they restrict car usage to in-state only. There is a hefty charge for going out of state, and they limit mileage to 200 miles per day.
If you don't pay for their insurance, they require your policy number and expiration date, which is hard to get when travelling. Also, the car was a few years old and it was dirty. Their rates are cheap, but you get what you pay for.
