Retired? Winners and Losers of the Fed's Big Rate Cut.

From savers to borrowers, lower interest rates are a mixed bag.

By Donna Fuscaldo, AARP. Published September 19, 2024.

The Federal Reserve’s first interest rate cut in more than four years is finally here. On Sept. 18, the central bank slashed its benchmark rate by half a percentage point, aggressively lowering its target range to between 4.75 and 5 percent. And the Fed has signaled that more reductions are coming.

But that doesn’t mean retirees should panic. It does mean that it’s time for retirees to take stock of their savings, investments and loans.

Wonder how many retirees here tied their CD investments to a longer term ( 7 - 10 years ) when interest rates paid were at their highest ?  I did because I know that what goes up can come down and now it seems to be going down.

However, I’m not sure that we are gonna see another 50 basis point reduction before the end of 2024 as the article states.  That’s gonna depend on what happens with the inflation and employment numbers in the next couple of months.

I am a very old person that is NOT concerned about the rate of interest I pay out because I have no debt but I am very much concerned about the interest rate I earn because even though it is heavily taxed, it is still part of my retirement earnings and that may affect all of us because, the less money I make, the less taxes I pay -  and that my fellow older folks might affect some of the benefits you are getting.

Please vote accordingly.  Do we want more years of poor  economy heading us towards becoming a third world nation?

Do we want a misogynistic, narcissistic lunatic running our country? The economy will recover.
