This reminds me of the NJ Turnpike.  When we were kids, we would beg Dad to let us throw the coin in the basket, but I think he finally called a halt to that because of having to get out of the car so many times to pick up the missed throws. 😄

Yeah, I used to love throwing coins into the baskets at tolls!  I’m sure there was a lot of change on the road at the end of the day!

Hand crank drill I think.  Bits go in, held in place by tightening the head on right that has metal grips inside to hold the bits.  Then the crank is turned, moving the head with bit. Producing hole. (I think, since I used to play with one as a kid)

Back in the day you could get your paper in the morning or afternoon. Don't know if an evening paper still exists. The morning paper and the big (no longer) Sunday have struck something awful. It has been years since I bought a paper. What about you??

       You just gave me my morning laugh!  Unless you watched it being used as I did, I truly don't know how anyone could figure what it is just by looking at it.

        It was used to lift the jars out of the hot water during the canning process.  Hence, sadly I don’t need one.  I vowed to at least attempt to “put up some preserves” once I retired, but have not done so.

I knew I had seen it somewhere - what an awful job when there was no AC - sometimes not even a fan.  But at least the flies were under control since it was done inside of the home in my case.

But I am not sure that was the absolute worse - Meaning, those HOT, STEAMY, FLY INFESTED summer days at the public cannery - These were like real life gossip mills and why mothers thought the kids would love it to go play while they canned is beyond me.  It was H*LL.

Thanks but NO thanks for the memory - now I will stuff it back down again - Never to remember that history.  

EDITED TO ADD - just buy a kit to do your preserving - see, this thing is still around and for the same purpose.  This one was from ACE Hardware.

I understand why @LeeS4949  was clueless - back then it was pretty much “women’s work” since it did involve food prep - bout the only thing my Dad did was to get us to the cannery and do some of the heavy lifting and then home again.

   Yup!  And I chose this photo because it was their 1965 appearance and five year-old me was down there on the street somewhere! 

    My clearest memory is of seeing Santa at the end of the parade.  To this day I remember thinking, “There he is!  And mean old Marcy told us that there was no Santa! I’ll show her!”  

     By the time I saw mean old Fourth Grade Marcy again, her mother had discovered what she had told all of the younger neighborhood kids, and then somehow Marcy miraculously became a Santa convert and readily agreed with me that there was indeed a Santa Claus! ) 🤶

      And the float I remember is Elsie the Cow.  I swear there was an Elsie the Cow, and I was enthralled because I used to visit the small Dairy Farm that was next to our suburban neighborhood just to see the cows.
