I still use the one my father gave me.  Around 30 years ago, the tab popped off, so I attached a safety pin to the tip.

And yes,, I have more modern tools with which to measure length, but this still comes in handy!

My grandfather had one. I don't remember how far you could measure but I know it was a long long way.

I kind of remember ball coaches using it to measure the ball field??
