You could still get this as a Factory option in Vehicles (GM at least) up to as late as 1984. 

 

I had a copy of Brian Auger's Oblivion Express... "Closer to it!" I had saved for nostalgic sake, not sure what happened to it though.  This tape loop concept was a great idea, though didn't wear well.

 Back in my old home town everyone had a set.

Story has it that the only reason I got a wagon was because family needed something to haul the ice and those BIG batteries for radio to the house.

I haven't used them, but I think you might use a pair to move a block of ice into the ice box you posted above.

 

I'm not 100% certain about the hooks, but my wife's Grandfather was the ice man who delivered ice to the homes. He is long gone, but everyone in the family has an ice pick lying around. He must have given them away.

Left one on these (in yellow yellow) in my grandmothers basement in 2005.  Was in fairly pristine condition, though even the consignment shops didn't want it at the time.
