Walgreens GiftCard - Error
Just received an email from - aarp@m.helloworldemail.com - April 4, 2025
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We are writing to inform you that Walgreens has notified AARP Rewards about a compromise involving a gift card you redeemed via AARP Rewards. As a result, the card has been voided, and the remaining balance can no longer be used in its current form.
In order to resolve this issue, Walgreens has requested that you contact their customer care team at 1-833-522-2487. Walgreens will be able to provide an active replacement gift card including your remaining balance. Please be aware that Walgreens is solely responsible for managing their gift cards and are the only ones that are able to issue you a replacement card.
Click the button below to view information on the impacted gift card.......
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When I clicked the button - it showed a Walgreens gift card that I had redeemed back in July 2024; with correct numbers and that I had never used, yet.
First, if you receive a similar email - now you know you are not the only one.
If you have a few Walgreens gift cards - this email reflects only one specific Walgreens gift card which can be revealed by clicking that button ---> card number and CCV Pin; any of your other Walgreens cards are not affected by the compromise.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Update Report 4-9-25:
The emails are legit and the problem is real.
Yesterday 4-8 went to my local Walgreens to test out some of the Walgreens gift cards I have accumulated over the years.
First, the clerk says that they can not check the balance without a purchase first, ok.
OK - try to make a purchase with the "wronged/ alert" card = it was not accepted.
Next, some of my other Walgreens cards - simple scan and they were accepted - one from as far back from last year 4-2024 ☑️
Summary: past Walgreens gift cards are safe to use and you may not need to verify their value; but the 'alerted card' after you click the 'button link' and see the Card Number/ CVV Pin = this will need your attention.
Remember: this is an 'alert email for specific Walgreens gift cards - and only if you receive this email; otherwise all other Walgreens gift cards that you have are safe to use and are not affected by the compromise............?
Thanks to Michael for responding and supplying a very nicely detailed report. ✔️

I won a $500 Walgreens gift card in an AARP raffle. I have not used it. Walgreens says the value is now 0 but will not tell me how or when it was used, or by whom. Nor will they replace it so far. AARP says they cannot do anything. Next stop may be the BBB and state consumer agency.

So I chatted with Cheryl per the above response. She told me “the links expired” on the gift card (what? Makes no sense) & then she sent me ANOTHER COPY OF THE SAME CARD & said to let her know if I had any further problems. Well, guess what, Walgreens STILL SAYS THE SAME CARD HAS NO VALUE. Surprise, surprise. So I went on chat again, got Amanda, who said she couldn’t transfer me to Cheryl, & then said AARP can’t do anything, contact Walgreens. Gee, thanks for “looking into this,” Cheryl.
I hope other AARP advocacy is better than this, because they’ve been of no help at all here. To add insult to injury, my rewards account still says I have made $X, which includes the missing $500 from Walgreens.
I have filed a complaint against Walgreens with the Better Business Bureau. Looking into whether I can file for consumer fraud in California.

I got the same email today concerning a compromised Walgreens gift card that was received in November 2024 from AARP. I tried to use the e-card in March 2025, but found that the card had been locked when I tried to make an in-store purchase. I called Walgreens Customer Service and was able to get the card reactivated with the same gift card numbers. When I initially tried to use the gift card in the store, the clerks were not familiar with the e-cards and told me they only know how to accept the hard plastic gift cards that you can swipe at their terminal. After my e-card was reactivated, I used the Walgreens e-gift card for an online purchase. I recommend to check the balance on the Walgreens e-gift card before use and only use to make purchases online.

I was told last year by a Walgreens employee not to accept their gift cards. I asked them what is the point of my getting your gift card then being denied the ability to use it? Eventually it was accepted but it is quite nerve racking to have these gift cards and then be denied. When I presented it, the clerk said she had never seen this type before. Of course a manager had to be called. I still have at least one that I need to check the history on as they say it has no funds. Worse is when Walgreens has a sale, since they don’t print the weekly ad anymore I have to bring my device or print it to show them their own ad. Don’t get me started about all the stores that have closed…
