Walgreens GiftCard - Error

Just received an email from - aarp@m.helloworldemail.com -        April 4, 2025

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We are writing to inform you that Walgreens has notified AARP Rewards about a compromise involving a gift card you redeemed via AARP Rewards. As a result, the card has been voided, and the remaining balance can no longer be used in its current form.

In order to resolve this issue, Walgreens has requested that you contact their customer care team at 1-833-522-2487. Walgreens will be able to provide an active replacement gift card including your remaining balance. Please be aware that Walgreens is solely responsible for managing their gift cards and are the only ones that are able to issue you a replacement card.

Click the button below to view information on the impacted gift card.......

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When I clicked the button - it showed a Walgreens gift card that I had redeemed back in July 2024; with correct numbers and that I had never used, yet.

First, if you receive a similar email - now you know you are not the only one.

If you have a few Walgreens gift cards - this email reflects only one specific Walgreens gift card which can be revealed by clicking that button ---> card number  and CCV Pin; any of your other Walgreens cards are not affected by the compromise.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Update Report 4-9-25:

The emails are legit and the problem is real.

Yesterday 4-8 went to my local Walgreens to test out some of the Walgreens gift cards I have accumulated over the years.

First, the clerk says that they can not check the balance without a purchase first, ok.

OK - try to make a purchase with the "wronged/ alert" card = it was not accepted.

Next, some of my other Walgreens cards - simple scan and they were accepted - one from as far back from last year 4-2024 ☑️

Summary: past Walgreens gift cards are safe to use and you may not need to verify their value; but the 'alerted card' after you click the 'button link' and see the Card Number/  CVV Pin = this will need your attention.

Remember: this is an 'alert email for specific Walgreens gift cards - and only if you receive this email; otherwise all other Walgreens gift cards that you have are safe to use and are not affected by the compromise............?

Thanks to Michael for responding and supplying a very nicely detailed report.  ✔️

So It seems some users were compromised and are due a replacement gift card, When I received an email from AARP for me to contact Walgreens about a gift card being compromised I simply went online to check my gift card balance and had this silly 5 dollar balance. Used it straight away because Walgreens only allows for 2 gift cards to be saved. Either way possible AARP management inadequacies, This does seems like a bunch of drama hooey and AARP doing some damage control for some reason. Check your balance on Walgreens before you succumb to the assumption of any compromise first.

Update 4-29-25:  Finally got around to resolving this error and call the 833 number. I have two emails - #1 - $5.00 card from July 2024 //// and #2  - $10.00 card from July 2024

Recap: when you call you may get an "audio security  challenge" - like 'what is 1 plus 6 ??'

I answered verbally and also pressed in the telephone number  'seven.'

Didn't have to wait too long to get a rep ( desi call center ) and explain the issue and input the card number to verify the status:

Card # 1 - after reading off the long number - eventually got the card balance 're-instated☑️  - so keep the paper copy of the card - it is now useable.

Card # 2 - after reading number - the rep stated the card number was not compromised  🤔   which means there are "false positiveswith these email alerts.

This is a 800 telephone number so there are no telephone charges (for those on budget telephone call plans). As the emails have stated this a Walgreens issue and not so much an AARP issue.

Walgreens, one of the largest pharmacy chains in the United States, is continuing a significant downsizing effort with the closure of dozens of its retail stores across the country this month.
Locations in at least 13 states are affected, with some stores already shuttered and others set to close in the coming weeks.

In March, parent company Walgreens Boots Alliance announced that it had entered an agreement to be acquired by retail-focused private equity firm Sycamore Partners for $10 billion.
Walgreens reported a net loss in excess of $3 billion for the final quarter of 2024.

This is the type of companies that AARP likes and continues to support without any regard or sympathy
for the seniors that have supported AARP for so many years.

Today, I got an email about a compromised Walgreens gift card that I had redeemed.  I presume I can ignore the alert because I no longer have the gift card.  Earlier this month, I received the same email about another Walgreens gift card and found that it was compromised and needed to be reactivated.  AARP needs to thoroughly investigate before issuing more Walgreens gift cards because this is becoming a serious issue.

I, too, no longer have the gift card, which I probably redeemed over Xmas.  So, this is a bit weird.

Got the same email. It is legit. Clicked on the link in the email and it takes you to the gift card in question (so you now have the number). I checked the balance on the website noted on the gift card and it errored out as if it was an invalid card. Next, call the Walgreens number given and wait for options 1,2 &3, but don't select any. When asked enter your gift card number. This will get you to a rep, then they should be able to help (although sounds like from others it depends on the rep). I explained the AARP email about compromised card. My rep had me give him the number and asked if it was a physical card or e-card then put me on hold to research it. He came back a few minutes later and said the same card had been reactivated. After I hung up, I checked the balance at the website and sure enough it was $5.

Not Again. 😡   April 18:  Another 'compromised Walgreens Gift Card'

Got the second email from AARP for a $10.00 Walgreens Card from 7-28-2024 (this was an Instant Win) ( the first one was a $5.00 )

     Here we go...again.....🙄  😠

Update 4-29-25: this card was a "false positive." Called 833 number and the rep said the number was 'not compromised' - ok ☑️  No need to re-instate.

I have no idea what is going on.  I called the number and they stated both cards had the correct balances,  Are they voided or good?  So confusing.

I received the same email notifying me of the compromise.  After a number of attempts I was able to talk with someone from Walgreens who looked into the matter.  We had a few communications via email and then at the end of May I got the email that said the issue was resolved and that a new card would be sent to me.  After waiting about a week I reached out to her since I didn't receive the card and she informed me that the replacement card was being sent from AARP.  Did AARP get the card from Walgreens and if so, when will it be sent out to me?

@JohnD955022   Several months ago, before receiving the AARP email, my Walgreens e-gift card was was deactivated and locked.   The Walgreens customer service was able to reactivate the gift card  by  phone.  A week after my e-gift card was reactivated, I received the AARP email about the cards being compromised.  AARP probably won't be sending out the replacement because it was a Walgreens issue that needed to be fixed.  Walgreens will either send you a new e-gift card as a replacement or reactivate your old e-gift card.

I received the same email. I tried calling the number a few times entering the gift card information from the email, but it says it's invalid and doesn't connect me to a representative. Any advice?

@Edkp58 , do you know how to send an AARP Private Message (PM)? IF yes, maybe send AARP @AARPConsumerCare one. Now ALL of AARP is off on weekends. Work weekdays 8am ET to 8pm ET. Good luck, Nicole 👵

I received the email Friday.  Saturday morning I called the number listed.  I went through a bunch of menus before I could connect with a live person.  He was of no help whatsoever.  I wasted 15-20 minutes dealing with him.  He asked me four separate times for the card number, then kept asking me for the serial # on the back.  I told him repeatedly it's not a plastic card, just a printout of an e-card.  Exasperated, I asked for a supervisor.  He put me on a long hold then came back and told me to call back in 1-2 hours.  No point in doing that, I'm going to call CS Monday and demand a replacement card or $10 in Walgreens cash.  When I look up the card # online, it rejects, no doubt because it's been invalidated.

Called back Sunday morning and spoke to another man.  (These folks are definitely in India.)  This time he took the card number and immediately reinstated the $10 value.  I called again to check the balance on the automated system and the $10 is now there.

I received 2 of the same emails regarding the Walgreens gift cards yesterday. I did not click on the View Reward Button as I have concerned about phishing emails. I called Walgreens Customer Service today. Spoke with 5 different representatives. They didn't know anything about the AARP email or issue, advised that they could not help me with a card that was not directly purchased at Walgreens. I will have to wait for AARP Rewards Customer Service to open on Monday morning. I would also like to know if the email is legitimate so that I can find out which ones have the issue. I am also very concerned that Walgreens has advised they cannot help. Will need AARP Rewards help to resolve this.

tThe email appears to be real.  I had the same concerns and nearly marked it spam and deleted.

But I pushed the red View info and it brought up my card.  The phone number in the email was on that card (at the bottom).  Called and my card is still valid per auto respone.  Confused but......

The email I received from AARP indicated that Walgreens Customer Service would resolve the issue on the cards.  You can check the balances of your gift cards online or by phone,  and if there is no balance, you can have Walgreens customer service check to see when/where the cards were used.  In my case, my card was "locked" for some unknown reason.  I suspect that when I tried to use my gift card in the store, the clerk was not familiar on how to accept the e-card and deactivated it by his "trial and error" attempts to redeem it.  The card was probably "locked" for too many attempts to redeem the card by the clerk or clerical error.  Walgreens customer service was able to reactivate my card, and I used it for an online purchase instead.  I don't recommend using these e-cards in the store because the store clerks are not familiar on how to redeem them.  They only know how to accept the hard plastic gift cards that can be swiped at the terminal.
