As I looked at this photo, it reminded me of something I found when I was indoors sorting through ephemera on one of those wicked hot days last week.

Reading what I found not only brought back memories of rotary phones, typewriters, carbon paper and phone books, but also, through the refracted lens of nostalgia, a bittersweet glimpse of kinder, innocent daysโ€ฆ

Before this there were the "Number please" and party lines. Good thing about these phones they were made good, to hold up to the slamming. Also your and my phone were the same color. I thought I was rich when we got a colored phone that hung on the wall with a real long cord.

This is great, Dave!  I was a pretty good kid but bad this particular day:  We had little money, and now and then none for soda, that's for sure.  So, one dark night, my older sister and I took a big cup up to the machine on the corner - bottle opener in hand.

Together, we walked home slurping a Coke-a-Pepsi-Green Spot-Rootbeer-Cream Soda medley of sugary delight.

More than 50 years later -- I still feel the guilt.  I'll have to apologize to Mr. Witco one day in the beyond.

We had these way before we had power. Ever room had a mantle with a mirrow above it with one of these put in front of it at night.
