United Healthcare Quotes

Beware of AARP United Healthcare. We were given a favorable quote over the phone so we signed up. When the actual first bill showed up, the premium had increased significantly. We were simply lied to and they swept it under the rug as a “rate increase” just 9 days after our coverage began. Had we known, we would have had an opportunity to shop around. Poor business practices.

Medigap. We initially signed up without the wellness benefit. When we later added it, we were told that my rate would go up $5-6/month and my husband’s $7/month. When we received our first bill (after coverage had started), my rate increase was accurate but his went up a whopping $23/month.

@ShariW77400

What type of Medicare plan was this ?

A Medigap plan?

A Prescription Drug Plan?

A Medicare Advantage Plan?

You say “WE” in your post - but policies are individual with I think, some type of discount for a family household where both are members in AARP.

This sounds more like a cost problem with the wellness add-on benefits than the actual Medigap policy.  The wellness add-on offers are additional insured member services apart from the AARP Medicare Supplement Plan benefits, are not insurance programs, are subject to geographical availability and may be discontinued at any time. Certain offerings are provided by third parties not affiliated with UnitedHealthcare Insurance Company.

That’s a copy paste from the disclaimer -

So you will have to talk to them again to find out why the cost changed from their quote to you initially on the Wellness add-ons.   But it isn’t the Medigap policy since the wellness benefits are extra coverage - it could be that they are giving your husband the gym inclusion or charging him for it under some sort of family plan.

The point is they quoted one rate over the phone but billed a higher rate after we had signed up. It could have just as easily been the case with the medigap policy quote. We spoke to 4 different people and they refuse to honor the phone quote. Poor business practices and poor reflection on UHC.

Our experience was the sales representative gave us an effective date, but after 12 phone calls, 5 emails and an $11,400 bill, the effective date was actuated, two months late!!!  False promises

Thing is, there isn’t wiggle room on the actual MediGAP policy since most, maybe all, AARP UHC MediGAP plans are community rated.

In fact if you check your state’s dept of Insurance MediGAP or Supplemental Medicare policy page, they may even quote the rates there by area - some states get real detailed; others not so much.

Medicare.gov- Get Medigap Cost

Your initial sign up was without the extra wellness benefits - for just the straight MediGAP plan.  The Wellness extra benefits attached to the MediGAP policy are separate - and are not insurance programs, are subject to geographical availability and may be discontinued at any time.

These offers are additional insured member services apart from the AARP Medicare Supplement Plan benefit.

Like I said, there could be a pricing difference on these EXTRA benefits for people in the same household - like they gym benefit - check with them on the pricing of the EXTRA wellness benefits.

You can always shop around for apples to apples MediGAP plans cause they are the same benefits per the letter of the plan between insurers - not so much for these extra benefits cause they vary between insurers or sometimes aren’t available at all.
