Delayed Medicare Enrollment

y choose not to sign up for medicare age 65. I might be taking a job at a hospital that emplys more than 20 employees. I would also be covered by a qualified insurance policy.

You need to make sure you have such a job BEFORE your initial enrollment period is over.

Check with the employer to see if they require you to sign up for either Medicare Part A and/or Medicare Part B - but especially Part A.

Under TEFRA, if your current employer has more than 20 employees, their GHP is considered credible and they cannot require a medicare eligible employee to sign up for medicare.  This would actually be a violation of medicare secondary payer rules. Under these rules, a medicare eligible employee has to be provided the same benefits as any other employee at the same job level. Employers can be subject to monetary civil penalties for violating these rules. The Feds started cracking down on violators back in 2016.

Yes, you are right -

just make sure you are hired and have coverage before your initial enrollment is over.

Signing up for Part A could have some benefits for you, particularly if you get Part A premium free.

Then there is also some consideration of the status of the employee like if they are less than 65 with a disability -

However, you didnโ€™t say how far over 65 you are - just that you didnโ€™t sign up for Medicare at 65 and now may get a job with employer coverage of over 20 employees.

So how old you are now may still contain a late sign up penalty when you do finally sign up for it - they do keep track of time periods - kind of like as permanent record that follows one into life.
