I turn FRA on January 1, 2022. I understand that your income limit is higher than the 18,240 allowed before penalties if you turn FRA during that year. So, is there any benefit to turning FRA in January. Is my limit still only 18,240 for 2021 before being penalized or can I earn more?
Once you turn FRA, there is no earnings limit and there is no deduction in your benefit because you made over a certain amount. So that goes for 2022 - since your were a New Years bundle of joy.
For 2021 - the earnings limit will increase to $ 18,960 or $1580.00 per month.
Here is the 2020 pamphlet from SSA on this matter with examples but please reference the above link for the NEW 2021 limits. I have changed them to the 2021 rates in this post to you:
SSA 2020 How Work Affects Your Benefit
The year an individual reaches full retirement age:
If you reach full retirement age during 2021, SS will deduct $1 from your benefits for each $3 you earn above $50,520 or $ 4210 per month until the month you reach full retirement age.
These are the new amounts for 2021 in the same link as above.
