Survivor Benefits

How long does it take to get a decision on death benefits? They have all the proof and paperwork but then I go online the check on that status it still seems to be still at the start of the decision process and it has been a few months and calling them is a nightmare.

It shouldn”t take long at all once you file and present proof of relationship, eligibility and death of the primary.  However, you can’t do it online -

SSA.gov - Survivors Benefits

Is there anything out of the ordinary about your situation that could slow the process down.   There are several but you would need to post more to be able to answer you more fully.

Are you the wife or ex-wife?

How old are you?

Are you still working?

Are you currently getting SS benefits?  Retirement or Disability?

Are you a past government employee that earned a pension rather than paying into SS program?

Do you and the deceased have minor or disabled children still in your care?

These are just a few things - could also be others.

You know the eligibility requirements, right?

Where is your closest local Social Security office located? Have you tried contacting it and asking your question?
