I started an online application, for SS Retirement Benefits and now the Protective Filing Date, set to 6 months from the start of the application is approaching, but I cannot choice a benefit start date any earlier then 4 months ahead.
The question is if the Protective Filing Date passes will my Retirement Benefits be affected or will I just have to resubmit an application?

I planned to start my SS at the end of this year, being at the max time to do it. With all the drama in Washington DC I thought I would start it in June, with a 6 month head start. I was able to start the process but then I could go no further. I called but no one could reply, said make an appt. So I made an appt and was seen. I explained it, he looked at my info and said "You are applying too early. The soonest you can apply is August or 4 months before your start month. So I waited. Aug 1 arrived and so did a note in the snail mail from SS saying now is the time to apply. I tried again but got a hiccup saying do contact them during working hours. I do not understand why all these ads telling us to do it all online, online is a 24/7 thing not a 9-5. But the next working day I tried again and was able to complete my application on line. Now it is a waiting game expecting that my application is accepted as is. Good luck with yours. Sorry I don't know anything about the Protective Filing date
