Huge delays in Social Security processing new retirement applications, does anyone know why
The website for Social Security used to say that it would take up to 30 days to process new applications for retirement benefits. In a week it will have been three months. Now the website says 2-4 weeks, but that has got to still be wrong.
I gather from other forums, that a delay of 2-3 months is now normal.
What I would like to know is, why?
Every time I try to search for information, all of the results are about disability, not retirement. And not a single results explains why it is taking so long when they already have my entire work history of 47 years, etc. They have all the information they need.
What exactly is it that they do to process applications which turns 2-4 weeks into 2-3 months.
Does anyone know why?
I cannot work a job right now, my arthritis is too painful.
I can't wait more months to begin getting retirement checks, I will be homeless.

Oh I wish I had known all this I would have applied earlier. I want to retire 1-16-2026 so I applied 3 months early like they had posted. LOL I haven't heard a thing about my checks starting in Janurary. But you know what my daughter applied for disability around the same time and she has had all kinds of contact from them, she gets letters and forms all the time. She was sent to see a medical provider to conform her disabilites. I have worked 50 years and paid thousands in to social security but I can't get a answer from them? It's fustrating for sure.

Applying for RETIREMENT benefits earlier than 4-months doesnโt help you. They work the RETIREMENT claims based on the date the NH (Number Holder) wants to begin benefits - so for you, thatโs 01/16/2026 so there is plenty of time.
In fact, if a beneficiary wants to retire early (age 62), you cannot even get a Retirement application to come up if over the 4-month window, even by a day. If a beneficiary tries to do this, the system will keep asking them about a disability claim since that is the only benefit which one can apply for their own benefits if younger than 62, even by a day.
Now, why havenโt you been notified that your claim has been received is of concern but you gave no detail so there would have to be a lot of guessing -
- are you applying for your own Retirement benefits?
- are you applying for Retirement benefits for early retirement (age 62), Full Retirement Age (FRA) or at the maximum age for all all your delayed retirement credits (70)?
- have you already stopped working so there is no further income being put thru if you are trying to Retire before your FRA?
- do you have a mysocialsecurity account set up so that they can communicate with you on the status?
Of course, for a disability claim, there is all kind of reviews of the documents provided but believe me, unless the person is terminal or does no have a Compassionate Allowance disability, then the process slows down to a very slow crawl because there is so much to consider - 1st being determined what type of disability the person is applying for - Social Security Disability or Supplemental Security income. The former being based on their earnings history and the later being based on income - once that is determined, the focus goes to the disability itself and medical data.
It is only 11/13/2025 Today so how did you apply 3-months earlier than your date of retirement of 01/16/2026?
Once you have been notified that you application has been accepted, you will be given a place in line but this probably wonโt be updated until your benefits have been scheduled for 01/2026 - which will be payable in 02/2026 since Social Security benefits are paid 1-month in arrears.
BTW, your benefits will be paid based on your birth day

Good Job - your did it properly and applied within the allotted time period and asked for your benefits to begin at the right time -
And you even have a few months to doubly make sure that you want it early without yet getting benefits.
Applying for SS Retirement benefits early at age 62, llike you did, you applied no earlier than 4 months before your age 62. AND you put down that you wanted your benefits to begin for the month of January
which is correct because you have to be 62 for an entire month before benefits begin.
Good Job - Welcome To Social Security - The Land of a Lot of Rules.

I applied for retirement benefits just over 5 weeks ago. I'm in California. After using login.gov to sign into the site, my status was still "under review". By rights, I should have received my first payment yesterday. I got a PIN from the SSA.gov/pin website, and called the national 800 number for SSA. The process for calling in an answering a few questions, plus providing the PIN, to the automated system worked very well. After providing the PIN I got right through to an agent! She said I had been approved, just not notified (or paid) yet. Hopefully this will be coming through very shortly. The SSA rep gave me the phone number and extension of the rep that worked on my case so I could get further details. I called and left a message...still waiting. So, it's looking good but no cigar yet... ๐ค

After making the call to follow up with SSA yesterday (using the authentication PIN was crucial), they finished their review and approved my case today. My account says that my first payment was processed today. In my case, they just needed a polite nudge and it got taken care of right away. Cheers, and best of luck to those still waiting.

I live in Indiana and I applied in June. I am now getting my second bill for Medicare part B. Over $1000 on insurance and still have not received my first check. 3 months of waiting so far. Iโve called after being on hold for 6 hours I was told they are still working on it.

Eight months after I applied to SS, specifying a March start date, I *finally* received notice of approval just a few days ago. Eight months. Of course, theyโre supposed to also send me money for the months that I should have been receiving payments - but thereโs nothing about that in the notification, and when I finally got through to someone at SS (holding over three hours on the phone, since callback wasnโt working), they didnโt know anything about that. If all I get is the first payment, Iโm going to lose it, and Iโll just go directly to the office of my representative to intervene.

Iโm so sorry youโre going through this, I know how stressful these delays can be๐.
Unfortunately, youโre right many people are now experiencing 2โ3 month (or even longer) waits for retirement benefit processing. From what Iโve gathered, the main reasons seem to be:
- Backlog from pandemic-related staffing shortages that still hasnโt cleared
- System updates and modernization efforts slowing certain workflows
- Manual verifications for some applications, even if records are complete
You might want to try:
Calling your local Social Security office directly (sometimes they can escalate urgent cases)
Contacting your U.S. Senator or Representative many have constituent services that can help push things forward
Checking your online โMy Social Securityโ account daily for any status changes
I really hope your application is processed soon so you can get the support you needโค๏ธ.

Applied May 7th for benefits to begin on July 1st (30 days, right?). Crickets. Contacted my do-nothing Congressman Issa in July-no reply at all. Contacted both senators and have only received a cursory form reply from one of them. Maybe the workforce should not have been decimated?

Actually, if you put down that you wanted your benefits to begin for the month of July - you wonโt get them until this month (August) cause benefits are paid one month in arrears and on a calendar based on your birth day of the month. Like this - [see the calendar and its legend at the bottom of the page]
However, if you have received no acknowledgement that your application has been received - thatโs a problem - cause it should say something on your Social Security account that it has been received and what step in processing it is currently in -
Now, there could be a delay and if so, you will still get your benefits back to the month of selection if it is applicable and there are no other problems with the date - like if you are are filing for early benefits at 62 - you have to be 62 for an entire month before your application is began to be processed.
Since you give no details of your application then I just have to guess at what could be the reason for you not hearing anything (and that is the most disturbing cause perhaps they did not receive it).
