Huge delays in Social Security processing new retirement applications, does anyone know why
The website for Social Security used to say that it would take up to 30 days to process new applications for retirement benefits. In a week it will have been three months. Now the website says 2-4 weeks, but that has got to still be wrong.
I gather from other forums, that a delay of 2-3 months is now normal.
What I would like to know is, why?
Every time I try to search for information, all of the results are about disability, not retirement. And not a single results explains why it is taking so long when they already have my entire work history of 47 years, etc. They have all the information they need.
What exactly is it that they do to process applications which turns 2-4 weeks into 2-3 months.
Does anyone know why?
I cannot work a job right now, my arthritis is too painful.
I can't wait more months to begin getting retirement checks, I will be homeless.

@spbrinduse , per the posts on THIS SITE
(1) About 4 to 5 months to receive 1st benefit payment.
(2) Someone got approved after visiting their local office to check on their "online" application.
(3) Another person says contacting your Congress Person helps.
Good Luck,
Nicole 👵

The element of surprise is about to happen 4 days from today, stay with your jobs, and be patient, this is like the ' Big One' - to be deposited straight to your bank accounts and go to your banks to open a new one for those with no bank accounts - make sure you have provided a bank account and routing number with SSA, don't expect any paper checks in the mail - that's what I have read on msn.com

Peter @peter22204 , were you always able to see your status online? 🤔 NOT being able to do this is what is worrying @mo5298 who also lives overseas like you. Take care, Nicole 👵

Thanks for replying Peter @peter22204 . @mo5298 , I hope you see Peter's response = he ALSO lives overseas like you. @mo5298 , I hope they update your status or send you your 1st BENEFIT PAYMENT soon. Any luck with contacting the US Embassy near you? NO pressure to respond. Take care, Nicole 👵

Thank you for all your responses everyone. I cannot even login to my account anymore. I go through the whole verification process and the message I get is "Unexpected system error, your login session has been terminated. For security reasons, please close all of your internet browser windows". Which I have done countless times and still doesn't work.

@mo5298 , sounds like your Internet Connection is now UNSAFE. Are you using any "safeguards" so a hacker CANNOT access your data? Hope so! Take care, Nicole 👵

I contacted my local US Embassy last week and got a reply saying they would get back to me in 7 working days. Thursday and Friday this week are holidays here for Easter so I am just hoping someone from the Embassy Federal Benefits division gets back to me because I am worried. ***]

What month did you indicate that you wanted your benefits to start?
SSA works on retirement applications based on (1) the month the beneficiary wants their benefit to begin (2) those who are FRA or older are 1st in line, followed by the early fillers.
The SSA will contact you if they need any added info but most likely, you are now just in the waiting time. Step 3/3 is when they assign a payment date and issue your benefit letter. Normally this step 3/3 and the notification will be completed a week or so before you get your benefit based on the SSA Calendar of benefits to be paid, based on your birth day. The legend is listed on the bottom of the page. (see below)
Living abroad may delay your benefits start time a bit since the SSA has other stuff to verify. The country, your citizenship status. Whether or not your benefits are involved with an international agreement - where you have benefits from work in the US and outside of it in an international agreement country. Here is a publication that will tell you about your benefits while outside of the US. This is also very important after you start your benefits because you will have to perform certain task to keep it flowing depending on your citizenship status. If applicable to you, make sure you fill out the form every couple of years declaring your life - After age 90, it has to be every year. If you don’t get it - get one and fill it out. If they do not receive it, your benefits could be stopped.
SSA.gov Your Benefits While Living Outside the US
Keep checking your online account, your benefits letter will probably show up 1st there than you getting it via mail. The SSA will contact you if there is any other info they need.

@mo5298 , I would be worried too!!! Is there an American Embassy near you? 🤔 When I lived in Jamaica, West Indies as a child of an American working there for an American Company - they HELPED Americans with this. NOT sure IF they still do. Lol, CALLING - take a chair and prepare for HOURS on hold IF you get through. Take care, Nicole 👵

I checked again today and it doesn't show anything, just a message saying they cannot show me the status of my application. What to do? I live abroad so cannot go to any office. Should I try to call? Very worried!😔 ***]

For those waiting : Here's an update -
What To Know
In an effort to clear up confusion regarding new rules, the SSA posted on X, formerly Twitter, on April 3: "If you are receiving #SocialSecurity benefits or #SSI, you do NOT need to visit an office to prove your identity to continue to receive your payments on time.
"You do not need to call or visit us if you are already receiving #SocialSecurity benefits or #SSI and do not have a current need to do business with us," a separate post reads.
The posts come after the federal agency updated its requirements for new benefit applicants. The SSA has implemented a new rule that will make it no longer possible for applicants to verify their identity with the SSA over the phone when making claims, or when current beneficiaries need to change direct deposit information.

I applied for benefits January 6th, it was stuck on step 2 of 3 until recently (I looked about 3 weeks ago). Today I get the message that they cannot even show me the progress (or lack thereof) of my application. I live abroad. Is it time to call them? Have I been scammed? Pretty desperate right now!

[Thursday 4/3/25]
@rolocedoc , I am confused. I get the part of you posting this info. Yes, I read it online. My question - in the TAG AREA you have "share it here if you have received". Received our monthly Retirement Social Security benefit payment for THIS MONTH (April 2025)? NO pressure to respond. Take care, Nicole 👵

Maam - there's no confusion - share - meaning, let the group know that you have received your pension despite of this report from MUSK - if you receive your benefits then maybe you're one of the lucky ones who have not been scammed - if this has been happening - ok - I'm clearing the confusion - I hope my explanation is clear enough for everyone - I have no intentions to make a SSA pension delayed - we need to give time to the NEW administration to work - on our favor - their intentions that WE - all retirees should be compensated for our hard work - have a blessed week!

Have you checked your mysocialsecurity account to see if they have acknowledged the receipt of it ? OR there will be a step 1-3 indication that it has been received and processing. You applied way far ahead of your requested date if you filed in January for a May (paid in June) benefit - IF you are at or over your full retirement age, this should not be a problem BUT if you are filing at 62 for your early benefit - just make sure that it was not filed more than (4) months BEFORE your 62nd birthday. Most likely, you didn’t if it gave you a Retirement application to complete because if you had you would not have gotten to the Retirement application cause the system would have kept throwing Disability application at your to fill out cause that is the only benefit that you can file on your own benefit when you are less than 62 years of age.
Your benefit payment will be scheduled to be be paid on your birth Day - per the SSA benefits calendar show below. The legend in at the bottom of the page.
Banks may post the payment or show it pending a few days before the WEDNESDAY that is shown here as your payment date.
Unless SSA needs something from you, you will not be contacted until a few weeks before your benefits start; A benefits payment letter will be posted on your my socialsecurity account and also mailed to you but you probably won’t see the mailed one until after you have gotten the 1st benefit. That’s it - no welcoming letter, no other notice - Welcome to Retirement.

Maam, I've recently retired, so I will just wait till they deposit it to my bank, I guess those who retired earlier from us / me should get their benefits first or if SSA has people assigned to deposit our benefits by the bulk, then, everyone should be getting it altogether. If there's any delays it probably would be from our respective banks who also need to process them - so there's a waiting period. I'm getting a part time job to compensate for the wait time, for sure it will be deposited straight to my bank or to every one's bank or a check in the mail for those who doesn't have direct deposit. Thank you.

[Thursday 4/3/25] @rolocedoc , hopefully there will be NO delays for anyone and I stay away from ALL Social Media. Too old at age 67 this year 2025 for the drama. 🙄 But I did SEE the info you had posted in my GOOGLE FEED NEWS and just "skipped" over it. TIME will tell with ALL things and all we can do is PLAN the best we can. Take care, Nicole 👵
