Hi and welcome

Thank you for the post.  I have heard of Pandora but do not have it.  Glad you are enjoying it and thank you for the recommendation.  I mostly listen to my ipod anymore but it is hard to keep up with new music that way.

I've been on a real big funk kick lately - listening to a lot of Parliament Funkadelic. I love how they bridged 50s/60s funk with early rock n roll, yet somehow made it their own.

Any other bands anyone can suggest that fit in this area - some solid funk chops, but the spirit of rock n roll?

Thanks,
Jason

Let me recommend the internet audio service Pandora.  You can set up "stations" to play the kind of music you like - I have Johnny Cash, Paul Simon, among others.  Pandora is free (with a few commercials) or commercial free for a monthly fee.

I wish this video was better but there is nothing wrong with her voice. I remember the first time I heard it from the CD.  I just had to stop and listen.  She was just amazing.

Happy Easter to you too Janese. Yeah, money is sometimes a problem. Glad it's a festival, otherwise the cost would probably at least  triple. We know Bon Jovi is your favorite, but that's a hard question you asked.

Glad  you specified absolute favorite rather than absolute best. Absolute best, I couldn't have answered. Absolute favorite, I'm torn.  Johnny Winter,  Lowell George with Little Feat, and Leon.  I love all three....however Leon is hometown. I've seen him so many times on stage and off. Used to see him at the airport when I worked there, (imagine him young in a floor length gray fur coat with that hair)  going into restaurants, walking down the street,  just living his life. And in his prime, his concerts were not to be believed, they were so high energy. I once left one of his concerts high as a kite, and I promise you I hadn't smoked anything. 😉 Seriously.

So not a clear cut answer, I know. As much as I love Johnny's blues, and Lowell, I could never favor them above Leon.

Glad you're going to see Bon Jovi with someone special. Being with someone you know will be as appreciative as yourself enhances the experience I think. Counting down to May 21st. I know you have to be really excited. Let us know how it is for you.

Hi Glenda,

This is only the second time for me.  The first time only cost me $35.50 but this time I'm over the $90 mark.  Well, worth it though.  I passed the other times he was here due to finances.  I have all the CD's and DVD's though plus Jon's movies so I get my fix that way.  Looking forward to the 21st of May.  I'm going with a really great concert buddy.  Who is your absolute favorite artist?

Happy Easter to you!

Hi Janese. You know the world is full of wonderful music and artists, but we all have some that are "special" to us. I'm happy for you that you'll get to see Bon Jovi! How many times will this be for you? Not enough probably.

And to Rienny, Back To The Island is  one of my all time favorite songs too. You will no doubt remember this one from the same album. JJ Cale is playing guitar on this one. Looks like it's going to be another Leon day around here as I just pulled out my treasured vinyl Will O' The Wisp.

Hi Glenda,

Leon Russell is really great.  He'll be at Summerfest this year here in Milwaukee.  I may get to see him.  There are just so many great artists and it's hard to see them all.

Right now I'm listening to nothing but Bon Jovi in preparation for the concert on May 21st.

Hi

I wanted to stop and say thank you for the time and effort that you put into this post.  There were some great performances in here.

I will take the time to listen to them all as I have the chance.  It's Only Make Believe still gives me a chill to hear..  he was amazing  and that is the best performance  of Cyndi's.

Thank you for taking the time to post these.  They were a reminder of the country rock music I listened to before I moved off to the great rock bands later.  It is great to enjoy a whole variety of music.

Piano -

Huey ("Piano") Smith & the Clowns:  Don't You Just Know It, Rockin' Pneumonia, Second Line.

'Fess (Professor Longhair) :    Tipitina, Big Chief, etc.

Alan Toussaint: There's a Certain Girl ("What's her name? I caan't Tell ya"), Mother-In-Law, Fortuneteller, Workin' in the Coal Mine

(and of course) Jerry Lee: Crazy Arms, You Win Again (and not so much Breathess, Whole lotta Shakin', etc.)

Guitar: Roy Buchanan (Will stop you from listening on, to others!)

Roy's best IMO - Patsy Cline's "Sweet Dreams"

And, to stop any comments here about others, Roy makes it perfectly clear (without actually saying it in words,) that Hendrix would be bouncing off the ceiling if, in some lucky moment in his life, he was playing half as well...

SIngers:

Tracy Nelson (An Irma Thomas protege,  her best - "Love Has No Pride,"  -NOT avlbl, on YouTube - makes Linda Ronstadt's singing sound thoughtless and emotionless.)  But try: "Can You, Fool"   and the ONE song she wrote - "Down So Low"   WifeII and I used to do this one; Tracy/Willie covering Conway/Loretta's "After the Fire"

and no, like most of us, Tracy WASN'T always overweight - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F5ycASOGbW4&feature=related

Cyndi Lauper isn't the singer you thought she was - she's much better. I used to see Blue Angel when I was a musician in NYC (where I also saw Roy Buchanan.) This Blue Angel demo was circulating among studio people at the time, and is badly edited - but I guarantee you, she did it exactly this well in person.

Everlies: Not over with. McCartney's tribute song is their best ever - just  when you wondered if anyone would ever harmonize that perfectly again:

Speaking of Conway, he wasn't a bad singer either. His hit, "Only Make Believe" was almost Roy Orbison-like in its range and quality: And IMO every bit as good as Elvis. Listen to this version:  the maturity of nuance, embellishment and musicianship as well as vocal power, easily rivals today's black singers.

of course, Roy Orbison could write AND sing them:  (try it -singing- I did. Start VERY low...)

Others:

Jonathan Richman's Modern Lovers - If you grew up in MA: "Road Runner" (Radio On. The wacky and brilliant "Loudon Wainwright of Massachusetts"...)

Roky Erickson : Many - "Two Headed Dog," "I Think Up Demons (for you),"  "Creature with the Atom Brain,"  "Stand for the Fire Demon," "I Walked with a Zombie,"  "Don't Shake Me, Lucifer"....

Almost Anything from The Neville Brothers, but especially the "Wild Tchoupitoulas" album... and ONLY the vinyl, not the very disappointing  CD, which leaves out a lot, and has bad versions of the rest.

His new album is "So Beautiful or So What," which features a religious theme and even a song inspired by a Christmas sermon by Rev. J. M. Gates, an Atlanta preacher."   I have not listened to it yet ..but I will have to check it out.

There's  a great Paul Simon album that just came out. The best thing he's done since Graceland. Some funny stuff about being at heaven's gate and having to take a number and fill out a form to get in. Kind of like the DMV!
