Hello from Ames, Iowa:

“The day the music died”.  This refers to plane crash in Jan. 1959 that killed Buddy Holly and other members of his band.  It occurred near Clear Lake, Iowa,

and is remembered each year at Surf Ballroom where Buddy performed his final show.
