GREAT COVERS OF YOUR FAVORITE SONGS

For many an original song that they love cannot and will not ever be duplicated by a cover, but there are many songs that have been done equally (debatebly) well by others..

So do you have favorites?

What are your favorite covers of favorite songs?

Dreams I'll Never See - Allman Brothers, covered by Mollly Hatchet

...not sure if it's Danny Joe Brown's vocals, or the tempo, but always liked the cover more than the original.

I’m not familiar with either, but I liked the Molly Hatchet version as well.

"Moody River"  originally recorded & written by Chase Webster (Gary D. Bruce) is to me at least miles better than the cover King of music, Pat Boone. Webster original has the feeling of raw emotion whereas Boones seems like another whitewash recording.

That was good. But, I thought I got a glimpse of someone who looked liked Vince Gill in the rest of the band. Doesn't he fill in as a session musician once in a while? Am I mistaken?

Not sure @dl73698250 , it is possible. I stumbled upon the video, then after I read what it was part of, then I researched a bit more. The show it was performed on was a tv special  America: Tribute to Heroes" in 2001 for 9/11 fallen. The credits for the show do not list any studio musicians. For this particular performance only Fred Durst, John (Johnny) Rzeznik and Wes Borland were credited. But there was mention that there were performances from various studios since there were many performers and they couldn't all be in one studio. They had music, speeches and some stars manned phones for donations.

"Going Up Country"  Canned Heat's cover of Henry Thomas (1928) original, even with the woodwind. Didn't even think Canned Heat's was a cover, it was so good. But you gotta give credit where it's due.

I noticed that he never said "Going Up Country" even once in the whole song. I wonder if it went by a different name back then. But, that's definitely the same song (modified a bit). I do like the revisions by Canned Heat.

That was a rare find. How'd you ever find that? Thanks.

@dl73698250 I think the original name was Bull-Doze Blues with different lyrics. Alan Wilson wrote the lyrics for their (CH) version. Good find @ripvanwinkle96, cause they probably never gave credit till people started researching.

and a whole lot of others have covered this.

The Searchers (63) and Del Shannon (64) did a pretty decent job. The Mamas & The Papas did a slow version in 1967.

I grew up on the Isley Brothers version, didn't think it could be done any better. But that's me.

Another cover of this song that is fairly well known, and I really like, is by Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris.

Yes it is. Thanks. There are probably a lot out there that we might never have thought were. Sometimes the cover was a bigger hit.

1967's Mojo Men cover of the Buffalo Springfield's "Sit Down I Think I Love You" turned out to be a modest pop hit. The Mojo Men turned out to be a group with a female drummer and a one hit wonder.

I would have to say Disturbed's cover of Sounds of Silence ranks right up there.

Johnny Cash' cover of Hurt is powerful.

I recall the MSC version as being more dreamy, psychodelia flower love musically.  Guess it painted the scene better that's why it charted higher than the other versions.

Harry Nilsson's cover of "Without You" originally by Badfinger and written by members Tom Evans & Peter Hamm was the version that got the airplay & hit #1. Badfinger's bad management and  financial situation led to two member committing suicide.

I didn’t know this was a Badfinger song. Might have heard it and forgot about it, but only remember the Nilsson version, which is one of my favorite songs of all time.

Bobby Freeman's "Do You Wanna Dance?" (1958) has been covered by numerous times {e.g. Bet Midler, Cliff Richard, Mamas & Papas)

The Beach Boys cover {1965} was notable because it was their only single that featured drummer Dennis Wilson singing lead. Reaching # 12 for the year.
