🤔 1923-1973 Do You Remember...

Remember this and the dryer that went with it. You know, a line between 2 trees and the use of many many clothes pins.

Had a neighbor who hung clothes, sheets, etc in backyard.  No fence.

   She had a complaint from another neighbor that it was unsightly, and in that person’s words, it was “bringing the neighborhood down”.  Our neighbor didn’t bat an eye, next day put up the entire family’s underwear to dry. Never stopped hanging clothes. 🤣. My mother then put up her line as well.

A story - my mom had a clothes line that would not stay up on one end -she gripped and gripped about it so my dad dug a really huge hole and poured in concrete and stationed the problem pole in it - it never moved again and he told her it was there for good !!! It was one of those double line poles that looked like a cross - you got the picture, right?

In 2000, I sold her property and a bunch of other acreage around it to a developer who was gonna put up those really big homes on a tiny bit of land - you know, where you cut your grass with a pair of scissors and every thing else is paved.  

Anyway, he began to develop the land and I would drive by occasionally to see the progress - roads were cut, utilities laid then homes started going up and way in the back ground - there was that cross pole standing tall.  I do not know the problem with getting it down but for quite a while it stayed up and I chuckled every time I passed it - guess my dad made sure that it was not coming down without a fight.

  What a touching image of those halcyon times when our Dads puttered around the house fixing things!  I am quite certain that your Dad somehow knew just how long his sturdy clothesline pole steadfastly stood its ground against the onslaught of those McMansions!

Thanks - I had this vision of a huge tractor coming in and just knocking every thing down when the developing began - that is until he got to this steel cross pole that was anchored way down in the ground - I bet it stunned the tractor driver when he hit it.

   We had an Atomic Clock in our living room when I was a kid,  I wish I had held onto this - it literally shouts, “ MID CENTURY”!  (…or maybe “Sputnik” 😊)

       Yup, jacks are still around! Amazon has quite a variety! 

        I’ve used jacks, marbles, pick up sticks, dominoes, barrel of monkeys, playing cards, Uno cards, and chalk (hopscotch) as stocking stuffers for years! 🤶. Maybe it was just the novelty of these simple games, but they never “flopped”. 😇. 

         The one simple toy I enjoyed, but just balk at buying (because I remember when they were 10 cents at Woolworths, and now they are 10 dollars!) are those little magnetic black and white Scottie dogs.  Remember those?  

           Geez…..we really did know how to make our own fun!   ….without batteries or bytes!

II remember the Woolworth lunch counter vividly.. My sister used to take me there after the Roy Rogers double feature at the movie theater on Saturdays..

     Oh gosh Lee - a Roy Rogers double feature!  Memories of kinder, gentler times for sure! 

      I distinctly remember the stools and the counter, as well as the typed and ever-changing menu.  

     Eventually, my Woolworths store disappeared, along with my favorite small department store that had an elevator operator who always wore a green vest and a smile.  Yet, years later, Woolworths wiggled itself into my foggy memory!  It was when I was in my early twenties, watching an adaptation of a Miss Marple mystery on TV.  I couldn’t figure out why the maid in Bertram’s Hotel seemed so familiar to me…..then I realized that the bandette that the maid wore on her head was just like the one that the waitress at Woolworths had worn all those years ago!  ….that little adornment, the crisp white collar and the miraculously clean apron!

 There were 3 major dept stores in the town I grew up in. Grants,Freezes,and Woolworth. Freezes had the elevator with the nice man who announced the floors and what was on them.. They also had the best Santas every December.. Grants had the best toy selection and Woolworth had the best lunch counter.. Grrrrrrreat milkshakes..

When I was a child we didn't do the sprinkler, part of the reason why is because of that other picture you posted that had 2 wheels and rotating blades. The other reason was it cost and well kept lawn's weren't that important.

Now my children and their friends did it all the time.

   I certainly do!  Lots of fun - and I remember that once my Mom told me to finish my lollipop first before running in the sprinkler, or I’d “fall and poke a hole through” the roof of my mouth ! 😇. I can also remember being admonished, whether within the vicinity of a sprinkler or not, to never run with scissors or a pencil, or a similar disfiguring fate would befall me ! 🫠

@LeeS4949 , yes! Swanson, weren’t they? In those aluminum (tin?) trays with even a dessert. Gawd, they were terrible! 😝 I remember the mashed potatoes were pure grit.
