AARP is fighting for a permanent extension of savings that lower the price of Affordable Care Act coverage.

Charlene Sterlace is feeling the pinch of higher health insurance premiums already.

The 60-year-old New York state resident has purchased insurance since 2019 through the state’s health insurance Marketplace enacted under the Affordable Care Act. She remembers her rates plunging during the pandemic when Congress enacted new tax credits. “I was so grateful,” she says.

The pandemic is over /has been over and those bonus subsidies had an expiration date - at the end of 2025.  This is not new information.  

No wonder, the country cannot get a handle on the debt - when Congress gives something to help people out during a particular time of need - in this case, the public health emergency (PHE), people expect them to go on forever - They do not.  

The American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 passed these “enhanced subsidies”  and were later extended through 2025 by President Biden's Inflation Reduction Act of 2022. 

Congress is now talking about them in the shadow of keeping the government open - I bet people will get their way and they maybe extended - but to when - it will not be any different when the next expiration date rolls around, if they aren’t extended forever.    

We are definitely a gimme - gimme - gimme society.
