There are several Senior Housing developments in my city (Louisville, KY) with more being planned.  I'm NOT impressed. They seem to mostly be in the central parts of the city with many attempts to change building/residential codes to allow apartment type housing options.  Feels like warehousing to me with limited shopping, limited public transportation availability, limited options for employment, and not safe for senior driving.

This is NOT the type of residence I want to look forward to as I age. I prefer a single house in an area that has many options available that I'm not limited to a 'normal' day with nothing available after certain hours.  I'm 70 but do many household chores after midnight or shop/visit friends after 9 PM. I don't want my life restricted by many of the 'rules' of senior living complexes.

[11/15/24] @GAKKIEZ  , here in Roanoke/Cave Spring (Virginia), we are losing our green spaces to way too many retail outlets. Roanoke is the city. Cave Spring is the county. The Senior Housing is in the CRIME ridden city. No thanks!!! I am in the suburbs (Cave Spring) which use to be QUIET AND SAFE. When I do drive pass our MAIN area on my way somewhere, it is like they haved ADDED stores to the one mall we have in the PARKING LOT. Lol, so you are lucky to find a parking spot. Anyway, like you - when I do move, NO more humans above - under - beside - across from me. Miss having land BETWEEN me and ALL neighbors. Use to "like" humans, now I "avoid" where I live. Gone are the days of neighbors respecting each other = not everyone has the SAME bedtime as you or want to deal with your brats. Hmmm, maybe I need to move to the moon.  ๐Ÿค”

@Winter2024, agree with you!  I want green space between homes and no one above, below or beside my 4 exterior walls.

Even 'old' people have issues with loud tv/radio when a neighbor like lots of sound or bass.

[11/15/24] Lol @GAKKIEZ , and the old folks who can't hear with their TV on blast!!! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿคฃ

Thankfully I can hear but I use to check on a lady in her 80's (she moved) here. EVERY TIME I had to ask her to "lower" her TV = was giving me a migraine.

I have ALWAYS had BIONIC ears and luved living out in Palm Bay, Florida UNDEVELOPED area. Empty lots on BOTH sides of me and across the street.  ๐Ÿ™ƒ๐Ÿ™ƒ๐Ÿ™ƒ

I did have a pain in my you know what neighbor BEHIND me and her brat felt a need to show up UNINVITED. Hmmm, my daughter has chores, homework and a bedtime. Hope to get that back somewhere here in Virginia.  ๐Ÿ‘

@Winter2024, I left Virginia (Fairfax County) in 2009 (due to job relocation) for KY (born and raised but moved around with 30 years Federal Civil Service).   On my return to KY, my mother moved in with me (I bought a single family house) and I took care of her while I worked until her passing in 2017 (she was WWII veteran, Army Nurse Corps).  Mom had been living in assisted living facility and had many issues with residents and their loud TVs.

I can understand issues with Brats!  I'm not a kid person and really don't want them around.  All my grandkids live out of KY since both my kids were active duty Army (daughter now retired, son injured in Iraq).  I only have to deal with kids on my terms and I do visit them periodically.  It's cheaper for me to visit than for them to visit me and I don't disrupt their busy lives.

[11/15/24] @GAKKIEZ , I donot have grandkids as yet and have NEVER enjoyed brats and their feel entitled parents.

I have one on one side of me with a daycare who felt she owned the building. Nasty piece of work. Use to put up with her as she has a darling 5 year old. Lol, but we NO longer speak to each other. Sad when women allow their drug dealing boyfriend to ruin things for them. The one last year I cussed out for blowing whatever he smokes into my open window. The one this year did the SAME thing to p.ss me off, this time the NEW Property Manager told me to call cops. She got the message. The honeymoon is over trailer trash. Luv NEW guy in office. The previous one was friends with her. Work with kids - h.ll no!!! Too many off the chain thanks to parents who feel their little darlings donot need to get along with whatever AUTHORITY FIGURE is at school. I laugh every day as more RETIREES are quitting as School Bus Drivers and Crossing Guards. All over our local media PARENTS angry there are NO buses to pick up their kids. Well that is what happens when you DONOT appreciate what you have. Harassment, lawsuits, bus drivers and crossing guards attacked because they dared to tell your brat to sit down or stop fighting. Retirees use to fill these spots here. Not anymore.

I moved to Manassas, Virginia in 2015 from Florida when my daughter moved to Arlington, Virginia for a job offer. She HATED here, went back to Florida in 2018. Not me. I moved to where I am when she left. She LUVS Florida. Only left it one time.

@Winter2024 , so sorry you're not as happy as you had hoped with your move. Funny you were moving to as I was moving from VA.  I did enjoy living in VA with many opportunities there.  I used to volunteer at the Air & Space Museum and at the WIMSA memorial while I lived there.

My grandkids aren't babies now (25 married -expecting my first greatgrand and in her last year of college, 18 - just started college, and a 14 year old).

Life is so different now than when I was raising my kids. Parents no longer want to parent and actually teach children responsibilities. I remember growing up and expected to be able to take care of the house or put a family meal on the table before I was 12. I grew up when it was still unusual for a wife and mother to work out side the home. My mom was an RN and felt she needed to be using her education she had worked hard for.  Now, it just seems the younger generation expects to be taken care of and exempt from their responsibilities.

I do enjoy the conversation and so interesting that we missed the opportunity to meet in VA.

[11/15/24] @GAKKIEZ , I luv Virginia, just NOT where I am. I want maybe a Small Cottage with some LAND around it. Maybe an ELECTRIC FENCE./lol  ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿคฃ

But as I AGE, I will have to RETURN to Florida IF my daughter continues to be stubborn about moving. She has been laid off since 4/11/24 and has NOT been able to find another engineering job. Lol, wish she would RETURN to Virginia so I DONOT have to move back to Florida.

[11/14/24] Here in Virginia, my apartment complex is NOT called senior housing but 90 percent of us are OLD.

Luv it.

Less parties in the parking lot!!!  ๐Ÿ™ƒ๐Ÿ™ƒ๐Ÿ™ƒ

I am told sometimes it is YEARS before folks on this area's Senior Housing List get placed. Alot die before this happens.

As in other locations in the US, there is NEVER enough housing for older people here.

Alot of assisted care facilities as my location has teaching hospitals and lots of medical businesses.

Personally at age 66 this year 2024, I am kind of looking at OPTIONS for IF I cannot climb the stairs from the parking lot to my front door. NOT impressed. But there is always NEXT year for "possible" options to be built. Hope so!!!

A range of housing offers degrees of built-in care.

Housing ranks among the biggest monthly expenses, but few older adults consider the most appropriate home settings for their needs until a family member or other caregiver presses for a move or an accident necessitates it.โ€ฏ

โ€œSome people are in such denial and think they can live where they are forever,โ€ says Robyn Golden, codirector of the Center for Excellence in Aging and chair of the Department of Social Work at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.
