Syncing Fitbit with aarp rewards.

I’d had an issue with aarp not syncing my Fitbit, even though Fitbit still said aarp could see my data.

over a month ago, I chatted and asked them to open a ticket for this. I was told someone would get back to me the next week. It’s been over a month- not a word from aarp about my issue.

i’d hoped that with the updates just made to aarp rewards that maybe this would have been fixed.

no, it still doesn’t work

i click on sync a fitness tracker, select Fitbit & then click on the login to Fitbit button and nothing happens other than the login to Fitbit button turns white.

if I click on any of the other tracker choices, something happens .

when will you fix the syncing for Fitbit?

@js22  That's too bad that you're having trouble keeping your Fitbit synced. I'm happy to hear that you are being credited the points though. Double-check that your device has Bluetooth on and open the Fitbit app. If it still didn't sync, restart your phone. Go to Fitbit Support for more help: https://help.fitbit.com/articles/en_US/Help_article/1866/. You will leave the AARP Help website and go to a website that is not operated by AARP. A different privacy policy and terms of service will apply. Please let me know if I can help!  Jodee R.

I'm so sorry that you are having the same problem with your Fitbit tracker, @mbassham. You may want to try uninstalling and reinstalling the apps on your iPad. After you reinstall the apps, you can try to sync your Fitbit Tracker. You can also check out the Fitbit Support page for additional help, https://help.fitbit.com/articles/en_US/Help_article/1866/. ~Corinna D.

I just addressed this in a reply to another comment, but I’ll put this info here too.

it seems that just because you sync your Fitbit from aarp rewards, that doesn’t mean it will stay synced.

this morning on my aarp rewards it stated ‘manage your Fitbit’. This evening it states ‘sync your device’(something like that. In order to be able to sync my Fitbit again, I have to go to the Fitbit app, click on  profile pic in upper right corner, click on your data in Fitbit, scroll down & click on manage connected apps, scroll down until you see AARP    Rewards by AARP

click on the Revoke access button. Then exit out of the Fitbit app.

i usually logout of AARP and re-login since otherwise I seem to get an oops message when I sync.

now you can go to aarp rewards again, select Earn & click on sync your device.

I am having to do this once or twice a day. Sometimes my steps credit, sometimes they don’t. After I went thru all the steps above to resync my Fitbit with AARP rewards, I did get today’s steps credited today.

@PaulB200242 I'm sorry you're having trouble connecting your Fitbit through the AARP Now app. You will need the latest version of the AARP Now application, which means you may need to uninstall it, and reinstall. To download, go to aarp.org/now or text the word "AARPNOW" to 50757 for a link to download the free AARP Now app. For instructions on how to sync your Fitbit, using either Apple or Android, go to: https://aarp.info/3emKZ8q Please let me know how I can help!  Jodee R.

i I am having same problems as above … my Fitbit is sync’ed and I received points the first day and nothing since.    Since so many having same issue … why not test in house to see our issue … it’s not very customer friendly to tell us to troubleshoot and we have and all seem to have same issue … no points after syncing … look at my history to verify what I’m saying.

test syncing a Fitbit and see if you get points after first day .. do this in house as a test.

@PaulB200242  Thank you for reaching out, I want to help. Have you tried syncing your Fitbit using the website, and not the mobile app? If not, I would like for you to do that and let me know. Please reach out in a private message with your email address so I can review your account. Take care!  Jodee R.

The issue is that aarp seems to desync our trackers, usually after we have been credited with points for steps.

so aarp say our device is not connected, however Fitbit says our device is still authorized for aarp.

From the Fitbit app, if we revoke the aarp authorization to our Fitbit data, then and only then can we go back to aarp and be able to sync our tracker. And it will credit our steps for one day only.

so basically because there is an issue with AARP, if we want credit for our steps, we have to go thru this procedure every single day.

sure would be nice if AARP would look at & fix this issue. I first reported it in November 2024. Other people are having the same issue.

thank you for your response!
I have read that activating of private messaging several times, but I can see no ‘settings’ on the community page in the upper right corner! I even checked account and account details and didn’t see anything.

here’s what I see(except my screen shows nothing to the right of the search, and if I click on that blank area, nothing happens.):

Well I did use chat, and was told that every time we are logged out of the AARP website, the tracker is desynced on the aarp rewards side.

i was told to sync the tracker with the aarp now app. So I attempted that. I logged into Fitbit, chose the data to allow AARP rewards access to, and then it brought me to the aarp website instead of the app. And nope. AARP didn’t show that I was synced. I went to Fitbit, revoked AARP rewards access to my Fitbit data, and then tried again to sync thru the aarp now app, logged into Fitbit, chose the data to allow AARP rewards access to, and then it brought me to the aarp website instead of the app. and no Fitbit is not synced with aarp rewards even though Fitbit says it is.
‘so I gave up on the app and figured I would go back and do my usual- revoke aarp rewards access to Fitbit data, and the. On the aarp rewards website, sync my fitness tracker, selected Fitbit, clicked on login to Fitbit button- and nothing happened. Refreshed the site, tried again, still nothing.

so now it’s worse than before.

and the aarp customer service person told me to contact Fitbit about this issue. She stated that the tracker is only desynced when Fitbit tells aarp rewards to desync it.  And she had previously told me that when we are logged out of the aarp website the tracker is desynced and that’s why I should use the app to sync Fitbit.

so I guess I am back to getting no points for active it’s again. I really think it’s an aarp issue that I use the app-app has me login to Fitbit, then I am returned to website instead of the app where I made my syncing request. I told the Aaron agent in chat that this had happened, and she had no comment.

Here it is 28 days later and I can’t get my Fitbit synced ever since I attempted to sync it using the AARP Now app like I was told in AARP chat. 😢 Fitbit says it’s not connected and aarp says it’s not connected. When I go to sync the Fitbit, the screen never changes.

at least when I used the AARP rewards site to sync, it used to work as long as I had revoked fitbit access to data from aarp rewards.

now that doesn’t work any more. Very frustrating that I follow instructions given to me in chat and it just made things worse.

I try every few days to sync my Fitbit with AARP Rewards- same result 😢

AARP needs to look at this issue and fix it- the current issue is on the AARP side, NOT the Fitbit side.

well, I finally found ‘my settings’ and thought maybe I would be able to  send a private message, but what I see and what is displayed on the page for the link you sent me does not match. Here is a side by side comparison- the photo on left is what I see- nothing about private messaging.

@AARPConsumerCare
Well I got steps credited for today 8/8. I didn’t even have to login to aarp to see that!  AARP rewards showed sync a tracker which means they desynced the Fitbit after crediting me with steps, so I went to Fitbit manage data, removed aarp rewards access to Fitbit , clicked on sync a tracker, selected Fitbit, clicked button to login to Fitbit, I did login to Fitbit, select allow all the data and saved it, was returned to aarp rewards page where it says “sync a tracker”. I checked Fitbit and it has aarp authorized to access my Fitbit data. Reloaded aarp rewards and it still says sync a tracker. Removed AARP rewards access to Fitbit data, and clicked on aarp rewards sync a tracker - same thing- worked in the Fitbit end, but aarp rewards still shows “sync a tracker”.

so I guess I should be grateful I got points for steps for a few days but looks like I won’t be getting any more until aarp rewards fixes this.😢

@AARPConsumerCare
I did call AARP and mentioned that in the community, I was told to call and find out why I can’t get to private message settings. She asked what the issue was that I wanted to private message about and when I said fitbit syncing with aarp rewards, she told me she’d connect me to someone who could help with that issue.

so I went thru how I couldn’t sync at all after having attempted to sync via aarp now as I had been told to do in chat. But prior to that, if I went into Fitbit settings and revoked aarp’s permission to access my Fitbit data, I was then able to sync the Fitbit from aarp rewards website . I had previously been told that when AARP site logs us off, we lose the sync. So I had to go thru this process every day if I wanted credit for my steps.

i told her that once I attempted to sync from AARP Now, neither the Fitbit nor AARP thought the Fitbit was synced.i told them that when I clicked on sync my Fitbit, it just sat on the same page but the button turned white. If I clicked on the button, it would again turn red, but that was it.

so she opened up an issue  199984439 and said she would escalate it. I did tell her that that’s what I’d been told back in November and I never heard anything back, so I was not hopeful.

every few days I’d try to sync my Fitbit just in case something had changed and the other day it actually successfully connected my Fitbit to the AARP Rewards! AND for the previous 2 days, I did receive points for my steps without having to sync my Fitbit again!

so I thought that everything was working great- checked this morning & it said ‘manage my tracker’’; just checked now and it says ‘sync a fitness tracker’ 😢 so I had to do the old go to fitbit settings ->manage data and revoke aarp rewards access to fitbit data, and was able to do the sync, but I did see a messageIMG_2562.jpeg

however, I do see “manage your tracker” on aarp rewards, and I checked Fitbit, and AARP rewards does have access to my data. Waited a bit, reloaded aarp rewards and my steps have credited for today! And aarp rewards still shows ‘manage you tracker’ !

anyway, I thought I’d give you a semi-positive update on the syncing issue! The only thing I’d like to see fixed is that if AARP logs us off, they either don’t de-sync our tracker, or let Fitbit know to revoke aarp reward’s access to Fitbit data so that re-syncing when we log back in to AARP won’t entail our having to go into Fitbit settings to revoke aarp rewards access to our Fitbit data.

@js22 , try calling AARP weekdays 8am to 8pm ET. Since last year 2024, some people DONOT have the TAB for the AARP Private Message (PM). Good luck, Nicole!

I did call AARP last week and said that in the aarp community I was told to private message them & that they’d given me a link for how to turn on private messaging but the pictures they showed were not the same as what was displayed on my screen when I followed the instructions.

she then asked what the issue was that I wanted to private message about, and after I told her, she said she’d connect me to someone who could help with that! I guess that was easier than her instructing me how to get private messaging!

Thanks! I will try that. I started a chat today and she had me click on a link and of course the chat went away. So I started another chat and she had me click on a link    to get more info about private messaging and again bye bye chat.

so frustrating! So I will call now thanks to your suggestion!
