Making Hotel Reservation

I was driving South to Florida and planned to schedule an overnight stop after driving 10 hours. A location was found and a hotel reservation was made on Saturday for a Monday night - the prepaid nonrefundable rate was used, as thought that would be prudent. On Sunday I checked the hotel again looking for restaurants in the area - to my surprise I noticed the rates had dropped by 25% for the same night, same room. Since I had prepaid there was nothing that could be done, although mentioned it when checking in and got a "the rates change" response. As a result I highly recommend always making a refundable reservation and checking back on the day before or day traveling to see if the rates have changed - as could then cancel the original reservation and make a new one using the lower rate.
