LET'S UPDATE OUR AARP PRESCRIPTION DISCOUNTS

It has been 7 months since I received, at my home, unrequested correspondence regarding:

                            AARP'S PRESCRIPTION DISCOUNT PROGRAM.

It was ridiculous that it was even called a discount program then....so what about now?

I take five medications.

Prescription #1- Their price: $1680.00

                           My cost:     $80.00

Prescription #2- Their price: $4.95

                          My cost:      $0

Prescription #3- Their price: $1.44

                          My cost:      $0

Prescription #4- Their price: $582.00

                           My cost:     $0

A fifth drug price was requested of their PRESCRIPTION DISCOUNT PROGRAM but I kept getting an error message but based on other factors, I would estimate that Prescription #5 would have a comparison similar to Prescription #4.

To call this a "DISCOUNT PROGRAM" is a misnomer or worse.

It is a discount program like many others - you check their price along with other discount places to see if you can get your meds cheaper especially if you aren’t concerned with using your Part D or prescription drug coverage -

It may not cover what you may need or at least at a better price so it is out - try someplace else.

It is called shopping around especially if you don’t need to use your Part D or Prescription drug insurance plan.  One option among others.

Many people that are using those GLP-! med for ONLY weight loss have to find a place to buy them since they aren’t covered at all by Medicare unless there is either a document Diabetes #2 or Cardiac involvement.

@GailL1,

You just don't get the point.

My point was:

HOW CAN AARP EVEN CALL THIS A DISCOUNT PROGRAM WITH A STRAIGHT FACE?

Whatever price after the discount, if cheaper than if the person had to pay more some other way, is still a discount and of value to them.  One size does not fit everybody in the same way because not everybody has access to the same cost programs whether insurance or a discount program and not everybody is looking for the same meds either.

It is an option - just like other medication buying discount programs - another one might suit you better - like Mark Cuban’s Cost Plus -  In fact you could take it medication at a time and find the cheapest place to buy each of them - discount-wise.

However if the med is on your Prescription Drug formulary - if you buy it some other place than thru the insurance, it isn’t gonna help meet the deductible.  That is what many people are finding on their new 2025 Medicare Prescription drug plans.

Tarheel she's got you on this one. If the price is just a $1 less than it's a discount. Now, what they didn't say was "We have the BEST discount program.'

It's all in how you use the wording.

Wow @nctarheel , I have NEVER looked into what AARP calls a "discount" on meds. Very interesting indeed!!!  👍

Got to check this stuff out. Discount means less, not best. It's like these cards that they have sitting around in the dr. office claiming discounts on drugs. It doesn't cost anything to have the cashier run them, just don't expect much or any relief in the price.

I just checked again on AARP'S drug discount benefit because they are running a BIG AD on their web site's initial page. Let's take an example of ELIQUIS, a drug taken by quite a large population.

AARP'S DISCOUNT DRUG PROGRAM---------------- $ 1953 for a 3 month supply

WHAT I PAY WITH MEDICARE ADVANTAGE PLAN-$ 80 for a three month supply

What a difference. How can AARP even call it a discount?

I have AARP Medicare Advantage plan. We don’t know if this plan will exsist sine The House and Congress are to decide. We all must fight for everything we have to this point.  Why don’t we get a list of pharmacies by price rating?  That would help tremendously.

@nctarheel , that is one thing I admire about you = you "check" things out for YOURSELF. Lol, and I AGREE with you my friend. Good to hear from you. Luv your "insights" - keep posting.  👍  Take care, Nicole  👵
