Court documents say an employee with the Department of Government Efficiency agreed to share sensitive data with an outside advocacy group.

By Deirdre Shesgreen, AARP. Published January 21, 2026.

AARP is urging the Social Security Administration (SSA) to take immediate steps to ensure Americansโ€™ private data is protected, after revelations that a non-SSA employee signed a secret agreement to share sensitive SSA data with an outside advocacy group last year.

In a Jan. 16 court filing, Department of Justice (DOJ) lawyers disclosed that an employee with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) โ€“ a federal cost-cutting initiative โ€“ agreed to share SSA data with an unidentified political advocacy group.

This is something we should feel free to discuss but needs to be private.

Following very recent event, I now want to ask AARP to PLEASE open a forum on current issues; it could be an opt in thing that is "private" for anyone who might be sensitive and so that would not expose anyone to anything they did not expect.

I, as 21+ year AARP Member, I want to have a private safe space for discussion with other AARP Seniors, not for anything other than just discussing (could be part of the UA)...
