My follow-up blog posts featuring instruments in rock and pop music intrinsic to our bodies highlights my second playlist using hands, this time finger snapping rather than hand-clapping, though some songs include both.
So in addition to hand clapping to keep rhythm, finger snapping has also found a place over the years in rock and pop music. It gained popularity in tunes of the โ60s, often Motown hits such as The Temptationsโ โMy Girl,โ The Marvelettesโ โToo Many Fish In The Sea,โ inspiring Billy Joelโs 1983 Innocent Man album release celebrating the doo-wop sound of the โ60s with โInnocent Manโ and โLongest Time.โ Roger Millerโs โ60s hit โKing Of The Roadโ spurred Jody Millerโs parody โQueen Of The Houseโ
Other songs featuring prominent finger-snaps include Blind Melonโs โNo Rain,โ Soft Cellโs โWhere Did Our Love Go,โ David Bowie & Queenโs โUnder Pressure,โ Wham!โs โWake Me Up Before You Go-Go,โ
Rickie Lee Jonesโ โChuck Eโs In Love,โ and Michael Jacksonโs โMan In The Mirror,โ and Cyndi Lauperโs โWhatโs Going On,โ
Additionally, TV programing and musicals have occasionally featured finger snaps, perhaps the most icon being West Side Storyโs โPrologueโ and โCool.โ In the โ90s Angelo Badalamenti provided finger snaps in the cult hit series Twin Peaks, including โDance Of The Dream Manโ and โAudreyโs Danceโ And the most famous finger snap song of my generation? Undoubtably the โAddams Family Theme.โ
