GREAT COVERS OF YOUR FAVORITE SONGS

For many an original song that they love cannot and will not ever be duplicated by a cover, but there are many songs that have been done equally (debatebly) well by others..

So do you have favorites?

What are your favorite covers of favorite songs?

It ain’t me babe, Dylan, 1964. Covered by

The Turtles in 1965. I love Dylan’s version

but there’s something about the Turtles

version that I love even more 🎼💜

Warren Zevon's cover of Dylan's "Knockin On Heaven's Door". You can feel the emotion of Zevon nearing death.

You Win Again  -  Hank Williams (Sr) Cover by Steppenwolf

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qal2HIBX9Kg

In his autobiography, Kay wrote about learning to play guitar listening to Hank Williams records, and getting a HW Songbook. Country music was very popular in Toronto back then. I believe it was also covered by his earlier band, The Sparrows. He later put it on his solo album, Forgotten Songs and Unsung Heroes

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i_XlUpn_hfU

Love that soulful, raspy voice of his, and the change in tempo.

Nice pick Volta. A Hank tune. Nice vocal by John Kay.

Nice work by the 'wolf boys too.

@jm2422  -  Thanks! Turns out both links are the same recording, but one of them was on a Steppenwolf singles compilation album. I thought the band was really good. Two of them were from Steppenwolf (Kent Henry, lead guitar, George Biondo, bass). They did double duty in The John Kay Band, which supported Steppenwolf, as they toured together after John released the solo album.

Good time Charlie’s got the blues,The Bards,

released in 1968, was covered by Danny O’Keefe

in 1971. O’Keefe recorded it first but The Bards

released it first. In 1972 O’Keefe re-released a

slower version for his 2nd album. That was the

version that became a hit. Excellent cover by

O’Keefe, it was his only hit single 🎼💜

Cash covering Bono / U2??  I had to give it a listen. Sorry, but it's not working for me.

I'm either too much a fan of U2 or not really a fan of Johnny Cash, or both. 😎

Something in the air, Thunderclap Newman,1969

Covered by Tom Petty in 1993. Although I like

the Petty version, I doubt anyone’s version

would stand up to the original 🎼💜

I fought the law, Bobby Fuller Four, 1966

Covered by The Clash in 1977. Their version

is certainly respectable but the original just

outshines it in every way 🎼💜

You’ve lost that lovin’ feelin’, Hall&Oates, 1980.

Original done by the Righteous Brothers in 1965.

I do like the Hall&Oates version but it doesn’t

hold up against the Righteous Brothers 🎼💜

NOBODY not even the great Daryl Hall, will ever top Bill Medley & Bobby Hatfield's

version of  the classic "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'.

Really nice version of Daryl Hall's original.

I agree the guy who wrote it it did it better.

But Paul Young had a big hit with it.

OK for English rock blues, saw them twice.

The real version is the guy that wrote it, with the great Little Walter on harp (harmonica).

It's OK. Doesn't make for a good country tune, even if  it's played

at blinding speed.

Nobody covers Roy Orbison, and other songs of this era, like Chris Isaak! He's got the voice, and he's got the vibe.  💛

I looked back quite a ways and was surprised not

to see possibly the best cover of all time:

Blinded by the light, Manfred Mann, 1976.

Original version by Bruce Springsteen, 1973.

Manfred Mann kicks it out of the park 🎼💜

@BeatleloverKT  -  That's probably because the MM version is the one that everybody knows, and isn't thought of as a cover. I don't remember hearing the Springsteen original, but that was a long time ago. LOL 😂   Fantastic cover choice!
