...A BAND ON THE ROCKS - Excerpt #9 (Billy Joel)

“Hey Billy, can I ask you a question?’ Brian brazenly blurted
as he tapped the singer on the shoulder. As Billy turned Brian
couldn’t contain his excitement. With no further explanation as to
who he was or how he came to be at the party, Brian confidently
went on. “There’s this contest that Sam Goody has, and they want
everyone’s answer to who the Stranger is. I figured if anyone should
know, it would be you!” Brian took the flyer from his pocket and
unfolded it in an instant, extending it to Billy.


Billy held the flyer in his hands, becoming visibly more
upset as he read on, finally losing his cool. “You know, you write a
song, it can take a really long time to get it just right, you
finally give birth to it and it becomes one of your children. Then
suddenly some record store makes a contest out of your
kid, minimizing the process and all of your hard work.” He thrust
the flyer back to Brian.


“Wow,” Brian said, “I never thought of it like that.” then,
without hesitation, Brian disregarded the Piano Man’s indignance
and went in for the close. “But hey, Billy, would you mind giving
me the answer anyway, so I can win the contest, take home the
video recorder?”


Billy ripped the flyer from Brian’s hand and scribbled
furiously on the back, the pen’s ballpoint threatening to poke
through the paper before he returned it and did an about face.
Brian glanced down at the sheet and stared in disbelief.

Billy had simply written: “There is no answer,” and signed his name with a
ourish..."
