Retirement in Virginia

My husband was forced to retire to due to Covid. We had always wanted to retire in the mountain region of Virginia. We are looking for a house on a few acres. Can anyone offer any advice or suggestions?

@marielg , aha - just found this post. We had talked about this interest in Virginia in the Travel Forum. Are you seeing any locations that interest you guys?  🤔  At age 67 this year 2025, I find living in Cave Spring, Virginia AWESOME. We are near to Roanoke, Virginia which has a large hospital system run by Carilion Hospital and Lewis Gale Hospital. Salem, Virginia is also near and has a huge VA Hospital. We are home to veterans and active military. Take care, Nicole  👵

Hi Nicole! It pains me to say that although I am so miserable where I am now and long for peace and privacy my (stupid) husband changed his mind. He tells me he doesn't know why he just doesn't. Believe if I could I would move without him but my social security alone is a mere pittance. I would be homeless. However where you are sound good especially with medical facilities close by. I still look at houses online everyday as I have been doing for the last 7 years.  Take care, Marie

Hey, keep looking. Mine died of COVID back in Florida where I am suppose to be moving back to as you know. His family is there and I am NOT ready to "deal" with his mother.  😉  His life of drugs and alcohol did him in. Will always be grateful for him giving me my only child, but he needed to go. So much drama and she really hated being around him. Me, ENJOYING my cute Studio Apt here in the hills by MYSELF.  🙃

Anyway, when I do - want a single level Tiny House near my daughter in Melbourne, Florida. That is where she was born and we lived up until 2015. As you know she HATED Virginia and returned to Melbourne. Me, stayed and LUV Virginia, just MISS her.

I am here if anyone has any questions about Cave Spring, Virginia (I live here) - Roanoke, Virginia - Salem, Virginia - Vinton, Virginia. We are ALL side-by-side and I travel to all frequently.

Sorry that I'm very late to this "party".   I have wanted to reply but I just carelessly didn't make the time for it.  Shame on me!  I have posted on this AARP forum about me desiring me to move.  One was a thread I started about Moving To A Place Where I Don't Know Anyone & I replied to Moving Out Of California (where I live now).  So you may see me at those threads.

I was possibly thinking of moving to a rural and mountainous area of Virginia.  I wonder if you and I have the same place or area in mind?   Maybe many others do, too.

You can PM me if you want to or reply on here; which ever works best for you.  I don't have an answer for you since I'm feeling like I'm in the same position in life as you are.

Hi Tom!  If you have been reading my replies to my post , I am looking and dreaming of the mountainous regions of Central and Southern Virginia. I try to research as much as possible - weather, crime etc. It is a lot of work and I have been doing it since 2017-2018. Cave Springs was one suggestion that sounds good that I will look into .  My soul needs solitude which I know nature can give me.   Take care
