๐Ÿšš Hidden Costs to Consider Before Moving in Retirement (AARP Article)

FROM THE ARTICLE.

6 Hidden Costs of Moving in Retirement.

Switching states for cheaper housing or lower taxes? Watch out for expenses that can eat into those savings.

By Sharon Wu, AARP. Published July 09, 2025.

You've spent years mapping out your ideal retirement relocation, envisioning life in a warmer climate, a coastal town or closer to family. Housing costs in your target destination look manageable, the lifestyle seems right and your move feels financially sound.

But hidden expenses can turn a dream move into a nightmare. โ€œPeople forget that costs like insurance, utilities and taxes vary widely and may offset savingsโ€ from cheaper housing or consumer goods, says Tyler Abney, a managing partner at Tidemark Financial Partners in San Diego. Those ongoing costs can strain your savings.

I just scanned over the article, to me what should have been #1 is the COST of the move. It would take us a year to pack and no way under the sun could we pick this stuff up and load in a truck. I have no clue how to recoup that expense.

Papaw @papawofboo , lol - you right OLD man!!! And I just read in Google News of a lady who had moved from ANOTHER state to Florida. Not sure WHY her things were in STORAGE after "movers" packed her up. When TRUCK arrived from getting stuff from storage, ALL OF THINGS were covered with MOLD!!! Article also said TRUCK ROOF had a "hole" = my daughter will fly here, pack me up & drive u-haul with a tow for my car. Now she had used MOVERS back in 2018 when she moved back to Florida. We had BOTH moved to Virginia in 2015. She hated it. I luv it & stayed. She had NO problems with MOVERS. So I guess it depends on WHO moves you. Now comes the BATTLE to hopefully get "enough" money to REPLACE what she lost.

ALL 6 of these things concern me greatly for when I have to move back to Florida from Virginia.

Left Florida in 2015.

Now retired & age 67.

Still driving but IF I am still "alive" when I can NO longer do so = back to Florida where my only child lives.

Anyone moved in Retirement or "thinking" of it?

Take care,

Nicole (Retirement Forum)
