Lighthouses of the world

There are over 20,000 functioning ligIhthouses around the world. I have seen about 75 of them  over the years.

Many of them on the Pacific coast and the Great Lakes

Sorry it took so long to set up this next topic!

A.L.🗼🗼Akrotiri Lighthouse is a 19th-century lighthouse on the Greek island of Santorini. The lighthouse was built by a French company in 1892, making the lighthouse one of the oldest in Greece. The lighthouse ceased operating during World War II. The Greek Navy recommissioned the lighthouse in 1945. The lighthouse is famed for its sunset views.🌅🇬🇷Photo credit: Nek Zan

Makapuʻu Point (also Makapuu Point) is the easternmost point on the Hawaiian island of Oʻahu, located in the Makapuʻu region. Twelve miles east of Honolulu, it is a popular hiking spot, offering great views of Makapuʻu and Waimanalo Bay on one side and the Ka ʻIwi Channel on the other side. It is the home of the Makapuʻu Point Light, which was established in 1909; the light was automated in 1974. The lighthouse contains one of the world's largest Fresnel lenses. According to Neal McHenry, the procedure to produce another 12-foot (3.7 m) high Hyper-Radiant Fresnel Lens is no longer known. The Light House is lit by a single 1000 watt 120 volt alternating current lamp. Should the first lamp burn out, a tangent lamp will automatically rotate into place. The light house and the area around it is owned by the U.S. Coast Guard.

"Took this photo with a film camera in 1997. It is Start Point Lighthouse. The name “Start” derives from an Anglo-Saxon word steort, meaning a tail. Following countless shipping disasters and heavy loss of lives, the lighthouse flashed its warning for the first time in 1836."

Jackson's Point Lighthouse

In 2018, Council authorized staff to work with a local resident on a proposal to design and construct a lighthouse at Jackson’s Point Harbour to replace the previous day marker. The lighthouse is intended to celebrate the spirit of Jackson’s Point and the harbour as a destination on Lake Simcoe. Construction completed in 2020 and the lighthouse is now operational.

The goal of the lighthouse is to provide improved safety to boaters approaching from Lake Simcoe, and commemorate a lasting impression and legacy to the people of Jackson’s Point, who invested in their community to make it a better place for generations to come.

Throughout 2018, Town staff worked to develop the concept for the lighthouse to ensure the structure would meet or exceed applicable standards.

I'm thinking that one is for the lighthouse keepers apartment and the other unit is for the assistants keepers apartment.

I want to share some information about fundraising for the Lorain Lighthouse and how money is spent.

"We raise money through our tours, Sunset Dinners, Trees and Trains, online and Lighthouse gift shop sales and donations. It's important to mention that all tours, dinners, online sales and maintenance are done by volunteers.

The money raised pays for things like insurance (like homeowners but really expensive), the electric bill (providing the beautiful lighting as you drive by at night, keeping it in clear view for boaters and freighter, heat, internal lights and ceiling fans), supplies to repair and maintain a safe and clean environment inside and out, our toilet system and the exterminator for spiders and other bugs.

It takes a village to keep The Jewel of the Port open to the public. We appreciate each and every one of you who contributes by donations and purchasing tickets. Thank you!"

Located on the Lake Huron shoreline near Presque Isle Harbor, the New Presque Isle Light is the tallest lighthouse tower accessible by the public on the Great Lakes. Built in 1870, it replaced the 1840 harbor light.
