A New Game For A New Year, Everyone Can Play

I Am So Old...

(this is the theme)

I remember during ballads at concerts people held up Bic lighters instead of smartphones.

(No politics!)

Thank you so much, covfefe, and good night!

And you had to get up and physically turn the knob to change the channel! The noise would wake dad out of his doze on the couch!

I remember people with sports cars would buy tires with raised white letters:

Goodyear Eagle GT

Firestone Wide Oval

BF Goodrich Radial T/A

I am so old I remember when cars only had:

am radios

one side mirror on the driver's side

the original push button starts for cars -- that little primer button that put some gas in the carburetor.

lock-free gas caps, before the gas crisis and locking gas caps became a thing.

two keys -- one ignition and one door.

...Gotta add...this topic could be really good for Politics and Society...It would be a record of social changes and If it catches on as a long running topic it could serve to build a sense of community.

Right! That was the plan. That's why I wrote (No Politics!). But they moved it because they missed the point.

I even removed my political sig line before posting just to play nice. There was a chance to get everyone in that category on the same page. But they blew.

Thank you so much, covfefe, and good night!

I remember when the city used to put public-use barrels of rock salt on neighborhood street corners in the winter.

If I wanted this under our front porch I would have put it under our front porch. Please put it back where I know people and they know me.

The topic is politics and current events. The new year is a current event.

People there don't always get along well so I thought this might lighten the mood. Geez.

How about regularly around 29¢, or as low as 10¢ during gas wars...seen any of those lately?

And "service stations" where they checked your oil and tire pressures and after the gasoline fill, you would get green stamps?

The cheapest I ever saw was 54 cents around 1980.

My father owned a gas station and gas in NC did reach 10 cents a gallon during one gas war. Tax was 12 cents a gallon. He lost 2 cents for every gallon sold.

Cheapest I remember (but too young to take advantage of) was in South Carolina in 1969 - 3 stations on corners of a 4 way stop - $0.19 a gallon.

This was in the late 1950's.  One station was always in gas wars....and they gave trading stamps, with double for fill-ups...  Remember trading stamps (S&H stamps and Top Value stamps.  When stationed in the DC area I worked part-time when off-duty in one of the Top Value redemption centers.

A friend and I used to hang out at the local grocery store and collect Bascarts that were left in the parking lot.  We returned them and pushed them through a machine that gave us Top Value trading stamps.  When we had collected enough we would trade them in for tickets to the local amusement park.
