WALGREENS May Have A New Business Structure Soon

NPR.org 03/07/2025 - Walgreens agrees to be acquired by private equity firm for almost $10 billion

Change is always pretty inevitable - sometimes you just have to do what is necessary to stay afloat.

  from the link ~

A buyout to take the drugstore chain private would give it more flexibility to make changes to improve its business without worrying about Wall Street's reaction. The company has already been making some big changes as it seeks to turn around its business. Walgreens has been a public company since 1927.

Usually private equity firms suck what life is left in a corporate purchase out of the entity they purchase and then declare bankruptcy for that entity. Walgreens isn't too long for this world if the usual process takes place.

I understand corporate world pretty well; what I have experienced with "equity" firms is not great (Caesars bought out by Harrah's? [yeah, the Kmart of casinos], then some equity firm).

Just mho...

@GailL1 , I use CVS for my Medicare prescriptions but was wondering IF this will affect those that fill their Medicare prescriptions at Walgreens?

I often wondered HOW both of them survived from way back in Florida when CVS arrived and built across from Walgreens.

@Winter2025VA

Both chains are having problems so don’t be surprised if a few of the ones around you are closed during the next year or so.

NPR.org 10/16/2024- CVS and Walgreens are ailing. Here's why

I don't see how they stay in business. The prices in the store are high as a kite, no one is as high priced as either of them. When it comes to the drug part, I check prices on our drugs and neither of them ever have a better price than Wal-Mart or Kroger.

The location of their stores was a mystery also, you can go ever 5-6 blocks and see at least one of each and sometimes two. I just never understood having so many stores so close together.

[Saturday 3/8/25] @papawofboo , yes CVS is "pricey" and I only go there every 3 months to pick up my Medicare Prescription refills. It will be interesting to see the CHOICES if CVS closes my location store. Luv it and the pharmacy staff. ALWAYS nice and have my refills filled in a timely manner. Yes, Walmart is CHEAP, but I so DO NOT want to deal with their AWFUL pharmacy area. Always a VERY LONG line with RUDE staff. Lol, my weekly grocery run there is all my old nerves want to deal with. I ALWAYS use their Self-Checkout. Reduces the chances of me going to jail from slapping a RUDE cashier. Kroger, NEVER used their pharmacy, so no comment.

YOU WROTE: When it comes to the drug part, I check prices on our drugs and neither of them ever have a better price than Wal-Mart or Kroger.

Take care,

Nicole  👵

I shouldn't do this because it is going to jinx me. The 2 Wal-Marts I shop at have been remodeled. Ever since that happened the people are nice, even ask if they can help when I'm looking for something. Have more cashiers on duty. They were like the ones you described. My wife says that WM has put something in the water.

You should check out the pharmacy at Kroger. The pharmacy is the only dept. I like at Kroger, their employees (not pharmacy) are the way the old WM were. Your Kroger's are in a different division than these so the pricing may be different.

[Sunday 3/9/25] @papawofboo , I am NOT sure IF Kroger is on my Medicare Wellcare Part D plan's list. Thanks for feedback and IF they "close" my CVS pharmacy - I will consider Kroger. Now to HOPE CVS stays open. I use to work what was suppose to be a PART TIME RETIREMENT JOB at the Kroger down my hill. Ended up p.ssing me off with calls on my DAY OFFS. Union said they would "protect" me as they kept threatening me with less hours or firing. I made it EASY for them and quit. Then ADD the kids they now hire (age 14) who were being paid the same as me as baggers and I was doing all the bagging. Miss some of the customers, still run into them - but NOT the drama. Take care, Nicole  👵
